Would anyone really have lost their minds over the A80 had it not been in fast and furious?

The car was already popular before that damn movie. I remember watching videos as a kid of it destroying Ferraris, Lambo's... pretty much everything it met on the road. This was also when 700hp was the norm for these cars. The movie did help, but to say the car wouldn't be where it is today because of the movie is plain wrong

If 700 hp was the "norm", you aren't talking about the stock Supra. What the guy is saying is no one was loosing their minds over the stock Supra. Most negative comparisons today are being made between the new stock car and the idea of what the Supra became, not the reality of what the stock car was.

Annoyingly FnF unduly gets 1000000000x more credit than it deserves. Even if that movie never existed the US MKIV following, market, aftermarket, performance accomplishments, etc.. would be exactly where it is today.

From a market value perspective, prior to that movie Supra values were already higher than its peers. There was a bump in value for a brief period time following it; however it was a relatively short-term influence and has zero tangible bearing on today's (or even the last 15+ years) values. Said bump was not overly dramatic, either -- maybe 20-30% max. In 2004/2005 values had cooled off significantly. They crept back up until 2008 and then the bottom fell out again with everything else. Fast forward and over the last 3-4 years, almost inexplicably, values of prime examples have doubled and in some case tripled and it's not because there was a FnF rerun on TBS. 18+ years on, that movie is just not a valid reason why awareness and values have done what they've done since.

Why then? Just to name a few examples -- street racing videos circulating the net of stock block Supras walking liter bikes (google Walser Supra), IDRA taking off in the early 00's and Titan, Virtual Works, Ryan Woon and others successfully campaigning Supras, TX2K, etc.. SW running 9's on stock block 6sp after driving his kid to school in it that morning. The Supra became an unstoppable force in the real world (up until 2010ish) and the people took notice.

Of course it's because what the Supra was capable of in simple bolt-on form, up to making 800WHP on the stock engine, trans, etc.. In terms of performance metrics no one has considered a stock MKIV to be hardly relevant, let alone a contemporary world-beater since the 90's. The unbridled potential with simple modifications was the highlight. Basic BPU mods got you 400-450WHP with 100% stock-like reliability and drivability and that was metric shit-ton of power back in the day -- enough to beat practically anything else on the street that had 4 wheels handily. Back in the early 00's you could do a bolt-on turbo kit, fuel system, etc.. in your garage with simple hand tools (I've done it) and make enough power to run 9's on race fuel. Again, 700+ WHP, 9 sec 1/4 mile, etc.. was simply mind blowing back then, and the fact you could do it without opening the motor or trans...! There was nothing else capable of that.

Before the movie performance factory was the first to run 10’s and then 9’s (not unibody with 9’s though) then powerhouse racing ran 9’s with full interior, full body, 1000 hp. This was in the mid to late 90’s. I would say the popularity had a lot to do with these two tuning shops as they were the first to get the car noticed before other shops jumped on.

Way before the movie.

Is Ryan Woon still involved with tuning and imports? Last I’ve seen, all he does is drive stock high end euros like the rest of them. Lol. I know he’s a auto dealer, maybe that’s why.
