Toyota's Sporty GR Family Could Get a New GR86—and an MR2 Revival

Toyota sees growth with the GR brand and wants more sports cars. We're in.

If wishes indeed come true, there will be a third-generation Toyota GR86, the automaker’s lightweight, rear-wheel-drive sports coupe. The GR86 stands out—along with its Subaru-badged BRZ sibling and Mazda's MX-5 Miata roadster—as something that should not exist in today's SUV-crazed world, where affordable sports cars with cramped or nonexistent back seats would seem to be sales- (and margin-)proof outliers.

“The GR86 serves a very important role as an affordable, fun sports car, a viral driving environment sensation, and that is something we want to keep in the Toyota and GR [Gazoo Racing] lineup,” says Cooper Ericksen, senior vice president of Product Planning and Strategy for Toyota Motor North America.

“That’s really the mission of GR, is to continue to provide that type of viral fun vehicle, Ericksen tells MotorTrend in an interview. “So, eventually when that product [GR86] runs its course, we would want to replace it with something.”

Ericksen likens it to asking if there will be a next-generation Toyota Tacoma pickup truck. “Of course, eventually we will need a next-generation Tacoma because it serves an important role.” Needing a next generation of the niche GR86 might be less obvious because the volume is so small, he says. “But I am telling you that it does serve a very important role for the company and GR so it would be our intent to have a cool next generation.”

2026 Toyota GR86 Yuzu Special Edition
Timing of the new model is up in the air. For now, the car continues to receive attention with a 2026 GR86 Yuzu Special Edition in a searing yellow color that pays homage to the 2015 Scion FR-S Series 1.0 release (the FR-S being the GR86's first generation, when Scion still existed; it later became the Toyota 86 and, now, the second-generation model is dubbed the GR86). It has the same 228-hp 2.4-liter flat-four engine but with the features of the Performance Pack standard and a choice of six-speed manual or automatic transmission. Toyota has said it will limit Yuzu sales to 860 in the U.S.

Ericksen would not say if there will be a gap between the outgoing GR86 model and a successor, as there will be for the next Supra. “A gap? We haven’t announced when we are ending the current one, have we? If we don’t have an end date, I can’t really tell you if there is going to be a gap.”

But that would not be his first choice. “It is never our desire to have a gap. It is always sub-optimum.”

Why are we asking about gaps at all? Because the Toyota Supra went on a 20-year hiatus before it returned in 2019 for a fifth generation. But Toyota expects a shorter gap before we see the sixth generation.

Toyota MR2 Revival?
What about another sports car: an MR2 revival, which has been rumored? Ericksen would only say he has heard the rumors too and has no comment.

David Christ, general manager of the Toyota Division of TNMA, would love to have more sporty GR vehicles, beyond the GR Supra, GR86, and GR Corolla offered today.

“With the GR brand we have proven that we can build and sell fun-to-drive, affordable exciting product and don’t have to go into the stratosphere on pricing to develop a fun car. The GR86, GR Corolla, and GR Supra have all brought good excitement to the brand.”

Christ said the GR lineup has been interesting because it has attracted older buyers as well as the younger buyers it had anticipated, accelerating growth in the U.S.

I wonder if the order has any significance meaning. Like if the Supra appears 1st, does that mean it will be the first one to go into production.

I could be wrong but I think we will see the GT3 first. News outlet are saying the unveiling will take place this summer. With todays update the next in line could be the MR2 or Celica. After those two mostly likely a new Supra. I think the 86 could be last since the 2nd gen is only 3 years old.

Supposedly Toyota will be moving production of the GR Corolla out of the Motomachi plant for preparation of the LFA successor.

Internet Bros: “ but I thought the Mark VI Supra was releasing in 2027?”

They haven’t completed the Celica yet and people are already saying the next gen Supra is coming soon.

People will be lucky if they see a new Supra by 2030.

lol, also wanted to add that I can't see Toyota releasing more than one sports car a year. My guess below:

2026: GT3
2027: Celica
2028: MR2
2029: Supra
2030: 86

I also agree with @C-Pike about the 86 being last. These cars typically have a 8 year + lifecycle. The GR86 came out in 2022 so with 8 years being the norm that would put in around 2030.

Given that the current BRZ and GR86 are coming up soon against new emission and crash safety standards in certain global markets that the platform and driveline won't be compatible with I wouldn't be surprised if each variant begins to exit the affected markets while remaining available in others.

Development on the Toyota designed 3rd gen is supposed to be underway already. 2030 is half a decade away so hopefully the successor won't take that long to be announced officially.

But if it takes 5 yrs to develop (via Tada san) then 2030 would still be the targeted date.

You are assuming that development on the 3rd gen only began in 2025. That does not appear to be accurate given that we've been hearing of the Toyota-led next gen design effort beginning in late October 2022.

https://www.supramkv.com/threads/3rd-gen-toyota-86-discussion-thread.16844/

That would suggest a more likely release date, (factoring in the five-year development timeline that Tada-san stated), could potentially be in 2027 (as a 2028 model year).

It's not uncommon for new model development to begin while the current model of the same vehicle is still well within its sales lifespan.

The current 86 and BRZ is an extension and evolution of the previous 2012-2021 generation to keep the model alive, improved and on sale as long as possible... while a later true full redesign from scratch was planned (as a 3rd gen). That's why the chassis was improved but not fundamentally changed and why the FA flat four drivetrain was improved and upped in displacement but not fundamentally changed or given a turbocharger.

They knew the current car wouldn't be possible to sell for a normal full model generation in ALL global markets but they wanted it to be freshened and improved to sell as long as possible in current form while the longer and costlier timeframe of a 3rd gen undertaking was thought through and planned to (hopefully) arrive without too much gap time between availability.

The 2026 model year GR86 has already been formally announced so maybe that'll be the last model year of the current generation(??) or maybe it'll go on for a 2027 model year(??). I think they'll keep it available to buy where they can for as long as they can until their 3rd gen is ready to announce.

Season 3 drop a while back, but sadly I didn't spot anything this time around. :(

I'm grasping at straws but maybe featuring the W10 is reaffirming that the MR2 is coming. Towards the end of the race we see a 2000GT and MK4 Supra, maybe that means the MK6 will be a blend of styling cues from both. Again, just bored and grasping at straws... ?

A80 design with 2000GT's proportion.

^^^That looks pretty good hopefully the next Supra will remain a 2 seater. Using the Z as an example I like the look of a small and sleek cabin

IMO of what should or could happen. The lower tier cars should have back seats while premium models should exclusively be sold as 2 seaters. Those with a smaller budget could find the backseats more useful for every day driving. On the other hand those spending $50k-$100k+ on a toy probably have one or two other cars laying around for a daily beater.

If 2026 was the last MY I think Toyota wouldn't pass up the chance to do another "final edition". Agree, Toyota is still selling a 12 yo Lexus IS lol.

It's like a sports car manufacturer!? Toyota and Lexus' new sports models are hot!!

According to a scoop obtained by the Best Car editorial department, Toyota and Lexus sports cars will be coming out one after another from 2026 to 2027. Starting with the new GR86, from new models to the return of the nostalgic "Celica", Toyota and Lexus are about to enter a big year!!

New models coming out one after another!
The next generation model will be the GR86, which will be developed with an engine by Toyota. It is unclear at this time what the Subaru BRZ will be, but there is information that a new model will be made using Subaru's current components.

Toyota and Lexus sports cars will be released one after another from 2026 to 2027. This is only a part of them, but it's still amazing that there are four cars. Let's introduce them in the order of their release (this is a prediction).

First up is the new GR86. While retaining the concept of a compact FR coupe, it will be equipped with a newly developed in-line 4, 2L, naturally aspirated engine.

This engine is the next-generation G20E engine that Toyota is currently developing. The GR86 is being developed as a pure engine vehicle and will be equipped with a 6MT.

Next up is the GR Supra. Like the GR86, it is an FR sports car equipped with a next-generation 2L engine, but this is a 2L turbo HEV. It comes with an 8-speed or 10-speed automatic transmission and uses a high-strength, lightweight carbon propeller shaft.

The next-generation GR Supra will be available as a Lexus version called the LC+RC Integrated Sports. The GR Supra will be a 2-seater, while the LC+RC Integrated Sports will be a 2+2-seater, to differentiate the two. Although unconfirmed, there is also a possibility that a convertible will be available.

The above will be in 2026, and the GR Celica will be released the following year in 2027. The GR Yaris M Concept, a mid-engine 4WD with a transversely mounted engine, will compete in the Super Taikyu race from the summer of 2025 as an experimental vehicle, and the results will be fed back to the GR Celica after being honed in races.

The engine will be a next-generation 2L turbo, and is likely to be available as a pure engine + 6MT & 8AT.

Will it be released? Mazda version of Supra
There is also information that Toyota is researching whether it can use Mazda's inline-six engine for the GR Supra. At present, a 4-cylinder 2L turbo is the most likely, but the possibility of changing it is not zero. If that happens, there is a possibility that a sibling car, a FR coupe that can be considered a Mazda version of the Supra, will be created.
