Just an update so far. One dealership in concord didn’t want to take the car because it’s too low.
The other one, one city over, had the car for two days. The first day they just checked with the car running and were able to run the oil. You can read the oil level when the engine has been started for a short period of time.
The second day apparently they took it for a long drive and they said they could still read it. So they told me they can’t present the case to Toyota because they can’t replicate the problem. I even sent them a video of the oil level check pooping out at 23%…….
I’m wondering if i can have them write a letter saying nothing is wrong with the car and then if something happens to the engine because of the plastic pump, they could be liable ! I don’t know I’m just spit balling here !!
Sigh

My guess is they don't know how to run the check. They probably don't know it's supposed to go to 100%. They run it, it stops at 23% or whatever (mine was 16%) and then it says Oil Level OK, so they think it's ok. Most Toyota dealerships are clueless about this car, even 5 years later.

If you do the check and it fails, then I'd take the car in, don't even call, just go in, tell the service manager to come take a look and do it right in front of him.
I have a video of my experience on youtube and I show what a failure looks like and what a 100% good check looks like. I can provide the link if you want to show them what a fail and pass look like.

Oh and have them do an oil pressure test as well, that will confirm the issue exists. That's what my dealer did. I believe the oil pressure test is in the secret hidden menu on the gauges.

Welp…. They sent me on my merry way because they couldn’t find the issue. And since I’m a month out of the 5 year warranty they said it was pointless!
Those exact words. The only thing they were able to achieve was scrape and ding my carbon front lip.
I have a dashcam so I will try to access those videos.
I told them what would happen if the car broke down and they said since it’s out of warranty and they couldn’t find the issue they wouldn’t be responsible for it!
Just my luck .
I’ll take it to and independent mechanic and bite the bullet.

Sorry to hear that. I had 1 month left in the 5 years, but when I looked at my paperwork again I had forgot that I bought the extended warranty which was 8 years. I figured it's a first year relaunch, with BMW, better be covered. It was $1975 extra, but when I bought the car during the pandemic they were giving them away. $3000 off from a Toyota rebate and dealer took $3000 off to move the car, so the extra $1975 was worth it.

At about $3000, it sucks you have to pay, but on the bright side, it's cheaper than an engine rebuild. A shop that does BMW's should get you squared away.

Thought you were going to contact Toyota like I described previously? And what does couldn’t find the issue mean? Seems quite simple to me. Either the level check successfully completes or it doesn’t.

I called Toyota of America and they told me I was out of warranty.
I took my car for a goodwill request and the first dealer told me straight up no because the car is too low and they wouldn’t be able to put it on the lifts, at first they said they would check out the issue and then they would contact Toyota. Sigh
The second dealer had the car for two days and they said that every time they tried, they were able to check the oil level. They even told me that they scanned for any issues on the ECU and they didn’t find anything . I’m guessing they just decided not to go through the trouble to ask Toyota for the goodwill repair.
I even show them the video I took of the issue and they said that it didn’t happen when they had the car there.
I was appalled at the unwillingness to help from the dealership.
I might go to a third dealership, third time is a charm I guess.
The only thing the second dealer did for me was discount half the diagnostic fee. Smh

If the third time isn’t the charm then your only choice is to respond with your wallet. And let them know you purchased your last Toyota product. They likely won’t give a shit but you’ll maybe feel better.
Before retiring this year, I had a job where I put 30 to 35,000 miles a year on my DD. In 2012, I traded a 2016 Civic rated at 36 MPG highway for a 2012 Hyundai Elantra rated at 40 MPG. I consistently got 38 MPG on long trips to places like Atlanta, DC, Charlotte, and Raleigh in the Civic. Yet on those same trips on the same roads with the same driver going the same speeds I was only getting 32MPG in the 40MPG rated Hyundai. I complained to the dealer, Hyundai, and even the Federal Trade Commission and, like you, got nothing. Eventually, after a couple years of many people complaining it came to light that Hyundai was a lying pile of shit about their mileage claims and they did a silly customer reimbursement deal where the customers had to be further inconvenienced to track records and file claims for tiny reimbursements that didn’t even cover maybe 25% of the additional fuel expense the lies resulted in. I’m still pissed the Federal Trade Commission didn’t do anything about it-I mean holding companies accountable for things like that is after all their entire reason for existence but what whatever. Anyway, morale of the story, I purchased three more DDs between then and retiring this year and not a damn one was a Hyundai which is those assholes loss because if they hadn’t lied I would have strongly considered and very likely purchased another one. So, fuck them. If I were in your shoes, I’d say this would be my last Toyota purchase.
On the other hand, the way Ford treated us on the known PTU issue was 100% opposite and the reason we continue to consider and purchase additional Fords. Corporations can be so short-sighted sometimes.

I knew there were going to be teething issues between BMW and Toyota when I purchased my Supra new back in 2020, but after 5 years, this is embarrassing and unacceptable. These two huge automakers should have it together by now.

I know the Supra is a very small niche in both their interests, but it still should be considered a priority especially since it's a renowned and legendary sports car name and both their names are on it.

I think next time around, I'd stick with BMW or Toyota. I'm going to approach the (hopeful) MKVI Supra with caution unless it's a completely sole Toyota product.

Huh? This is not unique to the Supra; the potential issue applies to all (North American at least) early B58TUs except the handful of m340is with the ZTK option.

If you’re strictly referring to the dealership experience, fair enough, but that’s also not strictly a Supra problem.

True. I should've phrased that better.

Still, do we know how BMW is dealing with the B58TUs plastic oil pump issue for those out of warranty? I haven't had a chance yet to dig around the BMW forums or reddit to find out.

I am frequently on the G20 forums and I haven’t seen anything notable yet. Forums represent a small sample size of owners though, and I imagine unless BMW extends the warranty it will be situational.

My warranty just ended, and if the oil pump died tomorrow I wouldn’t attempt bringing it to Toyota.

There is an overriding condition with regards to warranty here in Australia and that is "fit for purpose" Even if a component fails outside the warranty period the manufacturer can't just fob you off if it fails far earlier than what is considered a reasonable life. So the Supra oil pump falls into this category. An oil pump should reasonably be expected to last the life of the engine and if it fails before that then it's not considered "fit for purpose" The manufacturer will of course try and wriggle out of this via the dealers but with enough pressure applied they always come to the party. Most people just don't know their consumer rights and/or aren't up for the challenge of dealing with the manufacturer which cost you basically nothing in money terms here.

Hey, Timo, might I suggest Sunnyvale Toyota? Their Supra tech is well-versed in the oil pump issue and will start a case with Toyota right away to at least verify the troubleshooting steps. As long as it's started before your powertrain warranty is over, you should be fine. And even if it isn't, I would still try to push for coverage.

I've had a really bad experience with another dealer in the Bay Area (Fremont Toyota), and they lied to me about what they were checking for. They don't want to deal with replacing the oil pump. I have very thorough documentation around the issue and the timeline of events here if anyone is interested.
