Hey all,

Just wanted some feedback on what you'd do in my situation.

My coolant pump/water pump failed earlier this week. Noticed my radiator fans blowing harder than usual and then a day after my AC stopped working. Brought it to the dealer and after a few days they diagnosed the coolant pump failure. Cars at 17k miles, just over 3 years old, and naturally my warranty expired in February. Dealer is quoting me around 2k for the job - should I be more firm about them doing the repair under warranty as a courtesy, considering my warranty just lapsed like 5 weeks ago? The car has been extremely babied, garage kept, no mods, 4 oil changes/services since I bought in new back in 2023.

They couldn't give me a solid reason as to what caused the pump failure in the first place. Didn't have any signs of coolant leak, it just failed seemingly out of nowhere. Feels like it was more manufacturer defect which is why I lean towards having it covered as a warranty repair despite being slightly outside the 36 month window. I knew going into buying this car that the coolant pump failure is pretty common but I was NOT expecting to have to deal with it at only 17k miles...

Unlikely that it will be covered under warranty. My understanding is that dealerships have to submit warranty work to the manufacturer for approval so that they can get reimbursed.

I imagine manufacturers have some kind of grace period/window that can extend slightly beyond the typical period for extraordinary circumstances? Wild to me how a coolant pump isn't considered a part of the drivetrain.. drive without coolant, that'll do the car some good eh

Is it the electric low temp coolant pump? It's underneath the intake manifold closer to the steering rack.
This is the pump that directly interface with the Freon in the AC system to exchange head.

Or is the failure the mechanical pump in front of the car driven by the belt?

Either way, the parts are cheap and it won't take long to DIY the change.

not driving a car much hurts it more than driving it more lol. doesnt hurt to ask to warranty it as a courtesy (even though the chances are low). if it gets rejected just take it to any reputable bmw shop. job isnt hard you can even do it yourself.

If warranty doesn't cover it, you could just get it done at any reputable BMW shop. These are basically the parts you need and can purchase discounted on the official Toyota parts website.

90118-WA535, O-Ring
90118-WA394, O-Ring
16100-WAA04, Water Pump
and some BMW Green Coolant

My 2023 went started weeping around that same mileage too but it was covered under warranty at the time.

i figured a coolant pump would be part of the powertrain warranty. weird that its not.
Agreed, shocking to me that it's not.

Dealer is going to give me a response as far as fitting it into warranty work on Monday. They've put me in a top trim camry loaner for now, I didn't go full karen mode but I put my foot down and they've extended a more fair solution so far. Fingers crossed they are reasonable.

I drive it 4-5 days a week, I just don't go much farther than 20 miles one way at any given point. It's not my commuter.

I'm not entirely sure, they just referred to it as a "coolant pump failure". I had a low coolant warning they brushed off about 8 months ago during a regular service, they topped the coolant up and said to keep an eye on it in case I get the warning message again. Which I didn't, even with this recent issue.

Had my 2023’s mechanical water pump replaced at 29k. Surprised at how many are failing at low mileage.

Ya my mechanical water pump starting weeping at 37k miles 😭
I got a new oem and it was full of burrs inside the coolant ports.
Maybe that's why my original pump went bye bye.
BMW quality control was 100% Yolo sending it with my pump.
