^^ You know... I love my 2JZ daily car. It's not making 1,000whp but it's brilliant. It's hard not to love any car that has a boosted JZ engine swapped into it.

That having been said it seems kind of like a waste to just rip out the B58C in his MKV before its even been broken in JUST because he doesn't want to even try making big power with it. Tuner outfits are already fast developing parts for it. I'm not saying a 2JZ isn't the end-all-be-all answer because it usually is but... I don't know... maybe at least TRY modifying the new engine and try learning a new engine ECU and architecture first?

His comment about swapping to a manual transmission though... that I've got no criticism at all there. Toyota really needed one at launch.

As we mentioned months ago, though, swapping an engine is not a simple as measuring to make sure it fits and plopping it in. You would have to make a 25 year old engine play nice with the suspension, the rear diff, the transmission, the gauges, the DME, etc. Not to mention the fact that even if you managed to make them work together, the tremendous time and money it would take to get to a even near-polished result.

Well maybe his overall view about the MKV still stands. He did praise the B58 and the current tuning that we have seen so I wouldn't be surprised if he's just saying he'll swap in a 2JZ just to stir the pot. I don't follow him much, even though I did see him at Targa Trophy 2018 here in San Diego. Is he even a car modding type of dude? He seems like Shmee and just keeps changing cars and never builds any.

I have friends with the MKIV and I like that they like it. I’m not a huge fan but whatever. Do I talk junk about their cars? No. Am I jealous of their cars? No.

A bunch of us were talking about cars in general and one of the MKIV guys (who also owns a 5 Series) basically told us that he believes the MKIV owners just feel “not as special” anymore with the MKV arriving.

That’s understandable if you get your personal value from the car you own.

On a side note I did go on to joke that his 4 is only 80% of my 5 . He responded that my 5 will be 80% BMW (told him that’s a good thing). He’s no hater. He may even buy one after he sees mine. But then again, his cars don’t make him who he is and neither do mine.

It is quite comical to me how there are a few very active members of supraforums.com that spend a good amount of time commenting on every single MKV-related post on that website with value-adding comments like, "Not a Supra!" They spend a decent amount of their time to go out of their way to do this, and even occasionally come over to this neck of the woods to remind us how much they dislike this car. It is particularly humorous to me because most of these are folks who have never worked at / for / with Toyota, they don't speak Japanese, and yet they hold themselves up as being the gatekeepers of anything "Supra" and credit themselves with the success of the car. In reality, the MKIV was a commercial failure (due to poor marketing, an exchange rate where the yen was stronger than the dollar, people at that time being unwilling to spend the equivalent of $80k today on a Toyota, and a number of other reasons). The only situation in which I could ever see myself being that upset with a car is if I was forced to buy it at gunpoint despite really, really not liking it.

Here's a thought:

Why not appreciate the MkV for what it is, instead of bitching about what it's not? That's how I see it. I'm glad Toyota did all they could to bring the Supra back and I'm happy to own one. It puts a smile on my face every time I drive it!

Seems people are forgetting there will always be a circle jerk around a certain platform on whatever forums you go. You go on SF and people drool about the A80, you come here and people drool about this new car. Almost seems like this new car took the place of the A70.

100%. Just getting another engine system swapped in isn't the same thing as getting every little detail, electrical quirk, all CANBUS messages talking correctly, little custom logic board controllers for various functions talking to the OEM chassis hardware correctly including the modern digital dashboard, etc.

I can think of a few people I'm aware of who, right now, are truly capable of doing all of those things with enough time, effort and money but I am certain that it won't be that guy in the video doing all of that himself and thinking through how to solve and correct each technical issue.

His wallet may buy someone else's time, effort an expertise to do it though.

I'm not on any Facebook groups for MKIV's, MKIII's or SC's but what I have heard about them doesn't catch my interest. It's social media vs a conventional forum where you can easily search for relevant threads and information sometimes a decade or two old to reference a technical solution you may be looking for or where new information, news and technical solutions can be easily found.

It's one thing to be highly passionate about the car model you own, modify or aspire to own. That is a healthy part of what car culture is.

It's another thing when there is so much crap talked about one group who swear by one model about another model they feel is damnable and by extension their owners.

The MKIII is great and so is the MKIV and so far I'm very impressed with the MKV. They're all a little different and can be appreciated for their strengths and flaws in different ways.

Technically I've got a sacrilegious 2JZ-GTE swapped car as far as the Supra heritage goes but... meh... I like it for what it is plus the changes I've made and a lot of other people seem to do the same with SC's.

By that token the MKV is as deserving of a 2JZ swap as the B58C is deserving of serious consideration in the car it came in to push to its limits to see how well it stacks up and what kind of reliable power it is capable of making.

We're fast approaching some big changes in the car industry and the sports car, muscle car and hot hatch markets are more niche than most enthusiasts realize. I do not like that personally but that's how it really is.

I'm glad the MKV exists as is. I still think it needs a few things on the option list (manual gearbox option, power bump, GRMN edition, maybe factory Recaro bucket seats, etc.) but all in all it's a great package in an era where R&D dollars are being disproportionately shifted into EVs and autonomous (gag to the latter).

I want to see what the car as designed can do once in the hands of tuners, pro race teams and the very people who own them privately.

I honestly don't get the hate. If vintage A80 MKIV TT's are still the end-all-be-all then nothing is stopping someone from owning one. They're amazing, legendary cars and always will be.

@KahnBB6, well said. You've made some good points.

The MkIV wasn't the legend it came to be when it arrived on the scene. It took years to reach the status it has today. Only time will tell if the MkV can gain a similar status.

Just due to the fact that the A90 was designed and intended to be modified with aftermarket support and the fact that it is a solid driver’s car platform... and because it is so popular... I think it has a very good chance. We’ll see soon enough if that happens for this generation.

The MKIV TT 6-speed was noted by automotive press at launch to be an impressive car performance-wise. You’re right— it did take years of tuner tinkering for it to be known as a 1,000whp-1,500whp platform.
