I have been waiting on the TRD parts for the A90 ever since I saw the leaked photos from Japan of the TRD carbon aero kit for the MKV Supra. I was able to buy the TRD carbon mirror caps through a U.S. Toyota dealer however, the front lip, side skirts, rear spats and the duckbill spoiler are not available in the U.S. at this time through any Toyota dealer and/or any tuner company. Through a contact of mine I was able to privately order from Toyota in Japan direct. My first piece is the TRD carbon duckbill spoiler. It arrived last week and it was just installed on Friday.

A friend of mine who also owns a 2020 MKV Supra ordered the Rexpeed carbon spoiler which is the same design. They obviously used the TRD spoiler to create a mold to make theirs. Heres the difference;

Rexpeed = $450, (wet CFRP) no bolt's or drilling required. 3M adhesive tape to mount. Epoxy has a little orange peel and the carbon weave has minor imperfections but still very good.

TRD = $2,300, (dry CFRP) requires drilling, mounts with two bolts and wing nuts & 3M adhesive tape (grommets included for holes as well as weather and anti-corrosion sealant). PET plastic trunk template included for exact drilling spots. Epoxy is thicker and as smooth as glass, no orange peel, carbon weave is exceptional and perfect.

Below are some photos of my TRD carbon duckbill installed on my Nitro Yellow MKV. I have also included the TRD manual in this post for those of you who are curious about installation prep. Despite it being printed in Japanese the diagrams are pretty insightful as is.

Nice, looks great and thanks for uploading the instructions! I personally would prefer not to drill into the trunk though.

Thanks. I understand but I think the diameter and distance of the holes can be used for other TRD aero coming like a GT wing as well.

Looks awesome! I don't want to drill at this time either. 3M is the way to go

Rexspeed website claims their CF is dry as well. Perhaps it's the finish?

I'm not convinced Rexpeed spoiler is dry carbon. It's definitely cleared with an epoxy and does not look to be infused either upon close inspection. It would most definitely fall into the Painted process listed below. Don't know anyone offering dry carbon for that cheap LOL.

Painting:

No matter how carbon fiber is made, there are certain quality controls in the manufacturing to ensure that it doesnā€™t just fall apart. However, the painted method for wet carbon fiber seems to be the loosest on those quality controls. On the other hand, itā€™s also the cheapest option for the manufacturer and consumer.

This process involves painting an epoxy onto the woven carbon fiber structure and curing it with an exterior heating source. This is the least effective way to cure and properly bond the epoxy. This process results in a finished product that has a varied consistency in the epoxy distribution, weight, and strength. Even the slight imperfections in the epoxy during this curing process can result in drastic drop offs in structural strength.

Infusion:

This particular method involves using high amounts of pressure and a vacuum (clearly not a cleaning vacuum, but a vacuum in which there is absolutely no air). While the carbon fiber is weaved, an epoxy is applied to the surface and with the high amounts of pressure and a vacuum, the epoxy is pushed through the fibers until the consistency of epoxy throughout the fibers is measurably accurate. The structure is then cured and tested for approval.

Dry Carbon Fiber

Dry carbon fiber is quite a bit different. It costs more but is roughly 70% lighter than wet carbon fiber and is just as strong. The reason that dry carbon fiber looks ā€œdryā€ is because itā€™s the most strict in terms of quality control.

Dry carbon fiber is made by coating each specific weave with a appropriate amount of epoxy while itā€™s being made, before it has set or cured. This optimizes its strength and limits the amount of unnecessary epoxy in the structure. This is how it significantly cuts down on weight. Because the epoxy is not coated on the surface and baked in, it has that dry look to it.

Because dry carbon fiber is so much more expensive, youā€™re most likely to see it only on performance cars that are enhanced for the track.

Lol indeed. I'm just citing their website.

Dry is supposed to be lighter. We can simply weigh them :)

Ah yes. I wanted to do that with my friend's Rexpeed and my TRD before installs but he had installed his already. The Rexpeed is still a nice piece and to an untrained eye side by side they couldn't tell the difference really between the two. I just like knowing I have genuine TRD on the car.

Thanks for sharing, I'm quite surprised the TRD one requires drilling...it might be a deal breaker to many ppl.

True. I feel more comfortable knowing after I start making 600+whp that my spoiler won't end up in the highway a few miles back shattered after a nice pull.

Great write up and photos. The quality of Rexpeed is great for the price but of course TRD will be superior in quality.

We have our pricing and such on TRD carbon parts for anyone interested in ordering.

Great post! I have the Rexpeed wing and the TRD Door Garnishes. Both in hand do have a quality difference but for the price itā€™s understandable. TRD will always have the one up on quality. for some who cannot get the parts easily or have the funds to do so have good alternatives in rexpeed and seibon.

not sure why photos appear upside down when I upload, if they are my bad lol

I like the TRD side garnish panels. They are around $3,850 for the pair.

something I had my eye on for a while. Once I saw at SEMA that Seibonā€™s didnā€™t have the lines and little fin that the TRD one has I ordered the TRD.

I actually got it for around $3400 shipped and insured to my door. 100% authentic TRD parts with all hardware and instructions.

Japanparts.com is a site that has it. You just need to search the actual part number. They have ALL the TRD parts cheaper then anywhere. Verified 100% authentic.
You will need to create an account profile to access the site, but simple.
IF SHIPPING TO THE STATES, you will need to fill out a customs form for FedEx or whichever currier you select.
