There is no such thing as bad publication. Whether they loved it or loathed it, their heads turned enough to make comment.

I was at a gas station the other day, and a guy around 70 years old gets out of his Ram 3500 at the same pump on the other side.

ā€œIt sure is pretty, son. But six cylinders, three liters—that thing wouldn’t pull a greasy string out of a dog’s ass.ā€

I laughed hard, and said, ā€œthanks for not saying, ā€˜nice BMWā€™ā€

I think my recent experience perfectly exemplifies the haters.

So I got a nail in my rear tire, slow leak needed to replace (sidewall) So the closest place to me at the corner, even though the had messed up a tire install on my C7 years ago(don't ask), was the easiest for me to swap it out once the replacement arrived since I didn't want to drive on it.

So I pull up and the guy comes out starts checking out the car and saying "Man, I cant believe they call this a supra, they shouldn't be allowed to do this, 2JZ is god, BMW etc..." I have this car and these mods and I"m a l33t tuner master" etc......... you know the deal.

So I was kind of watching him do it but on the phone outside on the other side of the car and he finishes and walks away back inside.

So i go over to look and notice he installed the tire backwards, with inside of tire facing out. So I go inside and tell him and he's like no way its not possible etc..

So the tire Actually has on it OUTSIDE & INSIDE written on it not to mention the tread difference.

On a side note, every time I drive the MKIV, it's always becomes a conversation piece and gets plenty of love, thumbs up, compliments etc.

The one question that usually comes up is, "what do you think about the new Supra!?" I don't consider myself a hater but when I'm asked that question, I don't give great remarks about it. I could easily buy one but TBH, I'm looking to build/restore a vintage 911.

I had a father and son ask if they could check out the car after lunch one day. The son was super excited to see one in person. They both only had pleasant things to say.

I was raised in a 87 Supra, then bought it from my mom for my first car and then had a 2nd gen 4Runner, 2 more MKIII's, 1st gen 4Runners, Tundra ect... Needless to say I've had a Toyota problem with a random 3000GT and Volvo 850 in the mix. Damn Fast and Furious movies ruined my chance at a MKIV so I patiently waited for the MKV. Even though my stomach dropped for a second when they announced the confirmed joint venture with BMW I didn't jump to any conclusions. At then end of the day I look at it from this perspective. Does it look how I want my car to look? Is it fun to drive? Does it have a warranty? Will my wife let me buy it? I was able to answer all with a yes, so I bought one. Everyone has an opinion, but yours and your significant others' matters most. Say thanks for the compliments and just flush the crap.

bought mine in Oct and daily drive it. since then a pretty wide range of love/hate:

Love:
Get thumbs up and honks in traffic regularly.
People walk up pretty regularly in parking lots and ask about and say it looks great.
Driving around see tons of head turns and hear people saying "Hey that's the new Supra..." as I pass by.
Had a group of high school kids literally stop in traffic and jump out of their 4-Runner cheering and hooting and hollering. Was pretty weird but positive I guess.
Neighbors/coworkers have had a lot of complimentary things to say about it and many asking for ride along.
Saw out the window of the gym last week, some teenage boy having his girlfriend pose for pictures in front of it.

Hate:
Second day I had it, had a guy in a huge-ass diesel truck try to race me up a freeway onramp and then tried to run me onto the shoulder. Had to slam on the brakes to avoid collision. Was still in breakin and frankly...don't give 2 sh*ts about racing some a-hole in his truck.
Two weeks in, had someone spit chew spit on the front quarter panel in commuter traffic on my way home from work.
Had some guy walking with his wife call out "Hey honey...look...its the new Z4" in a sarcastic tone.
Have 20-somethings (oddly...always driving mustangs, lol) constantly pulling up and revving or posturing in traffic.
Have had about half a dozen people say "You having a midlife crisis or something?" in a critical tone (I'm nearly 50 and have always drive pretty utilitarian vehicles). So I just say "Hell yeah". Worked my ass off for years and going to enjoy every minute.

I'm too old to really give a sh*t anymore. BMW makes great cars. This is a collaboration and likely wouldn't have been produced if that weren't the case...or would be too expensive otherwise. The car looks great and is a blast to drive. It has tons of potential for upgrades which makes it have a big "life after purchase" value for me.
I am 70, though very active and do cross country hikes in rugged areas, every day so but looking to get one, in Nitro. So who gives a damn what they think. But don't spit on my car! Bought a 2012 FJ Cruiser, still have, excellent vehicle and 4 wheeled all my life, and two weeks in, someone keyed it. Humans, could do without a number of them.

For me, I have had a late 90's corolla full of kids saying "Nice BMW" and drives off. The next day I am in the same place in my R32 GT-R and they get out of their cars to take pics. I told them "Hey aren't you the same kids that tried dissing my Supra last night in your POS corolla?" They immediately regretted it and walked away.

I had a great pair of young guys when leaving Pep Boys and was in the Supra. They were excited to see the car.... I let them sit in it and they were more than grateful and cool to talk too. They knew it was mostly BMW - but were still at least respectful and loved the lines. They were in an old Jetta and were happy to see something more modern.

They could have been jerks - and would not had the chance to see it up close.

A small amount of politeness goes a long way.

I have never had any one say a bad thing about it and I have had it since July. Quite the opposite; every time I have it out I get compliments.
That has been my experience as well apart from a big younger Police Officer who pulled up while we were taking some pictures & said "Nice BMW" with a massive smile on his face, we knew he was just messing with us :)

I would have been polite too if they weren't touching my car and fronting with it.

Have not had any negative comments. When I’m on the road I’m constantly getting thumbs up or catching people taking pictures and videos. As I said in another Supra forum, if you didn’t know what brand the car was, from it’s styling, build quality, driveability, unique/rareness etc etc, you’d buy it anyways because it’s that good. I look forward to driving this car EVERY single time! Life’s too short, block out the naysayers and enjoy.

I just think it's hilarious how the majority of the haters center the criticism around the lack of a 2JZ or "true toyota-ness" of it. It's not worth reminding them, but I often think about the comparison and how (to me at least) it actually holds up very well in that light:
1) Great handling, comfort, and performance... while being so conservatively tuned that economy and reliability are optimal.
2) Designed so that those who wish to, can lose much of the economy and reliability - and build a monster of their own specification.
3) A distinctive appearance which is mild enough to remain reasonable, yet unique enough to never blend in too much.

Almost none of the haters are thinking of a bone-stock MKIV... which was nothing of the "monster" the built & tuned versions became. Now, as far as the criticism regarding it not being available in a manual... I've got nothing to say there. I wish it had been an option as well - but then again, times change. The "it should have been a DCT" people, I just ignore... that's only a benefit on paper and for truly over-built track versions... this transmission is more than adequate for anything that can be considered "mild tuning" (i.e. less than 75% more power than stock). It seems like many of the "it's gonna blow up like all BMW's" people are cherry picking... I personally don't know of any 1000+HP monster MKIV's that have been driven 100K+ trouble-free miles after being built. Note that's not a criticism... it's expected - you don't expect the same reliability from a drag/dyno champion. At the same time, as an auto manufacturer... you also don't warranty that!

As far as tuning-capable platforms... name the recent model that runs a full Toyota drivetrain... oops. I know I didn't find many options for my RC-F when I had it. Really about all that even comes close are their trucks, at least until you are back in the 90's, talking about the MKIV again. :p
