I have only had negative comments on the internet and I truly believe it’s by those who can’t afford it and are jealous. In person I’ve had nothing but compliments. Everyone that I’ve chatted with has said the car looks much better in person. Honestly, who cares what others think. Enjoy the car!

Some of the most negative comments come from Toyota loyalists, which cracks me up because other than the entry-level 86, Toyota USA has been playing the lame game with sports cars for many years. Me, I see the Supra as a discounted BMW sports cars and BMW has a proven and respected history in that arena. My main criticism is lack of a manual transmission that a sports car deserves to have. Pretty much everything else I hear people gripe about is noise, from people who just don't get it. The typical superficial criticisms come from people who aren't "car guys" so it's pretty easy to ignore. No rational car guy would turn down a BMW M car and they shouldn't turn down a Supra either.

Since getting the car, I've received a lot of love but also a decent amount of hate from people, but I think it's very funny. Since we do a lot of time attack events all over the US, we travel around and meet a lot of people, so we were at Road Atlanta in August and this dude comes up to our Supra, asks my crew chief if it was his car. The crew chief replied no, and this guy explodes into a rampage of insults i.e. "stupid POS BMW, I hate this car so much, pile of garbage, not a Supra" etc for about a minute straight and storms off. My crew chief died laughing.
It seems like these so-called enthusiasts are hating the Supra Mk5 because it's the cool thing to do, and they all pile on and say the same thing without thinking for themselves.
At the same time, I've had multiple people tell me how they disliked or hated the Mk5 when it first came out, but seeing us racing it on track really changed their perspective and they started liking or even loving the Mk5. It's hard to get a better compliment for what we do than that.

Some competitors and rivals had jokes to make, but most of them disappeared after we nailed the fastest RWD time in our class at Global Time Attack. I look forward to developing the car further, proving more of these haters wrong, and changing more minds from hate to love ha.

Car wash guy just questioned me as to why Toyota would put a BMW engine in my car. Then a guy driving a Porsche SUV chimed in that he would've gotten the NSX instead. I laughed at both of them :rolleyes1::dunno:

Then :drive:(sans manual gearbox lol)

I think that there is also 'you tainted my lineage!!!!111111' factor. When Mitsubishi re-introduced the Eclipse, boy the Eclipse fanboys were mad. Even though what the Eclipse is now changes nothing about older Eclipse's nor does it taint anything or affect the precious 'lineage' of what the cars are\were.

As for the topic, 0 and it's my daily. I don't surround myself with idiots & I work with good people who all got a kick out of it when it showed up on the lot (even a couple of classic car guys who work where I work). I general, I find that people who are good happy people will be happy for you regardless & don't need to dump on something to feel better.

When I picked mine up from the dealer, there were actually a couple other people coming through to look at the car in person. Some guy actually said nice BMW right as I was about to drive it out. I've had a couple comments here in there at local car meetups

I just love the mentality some people have where they believe that the MkV can't be a good car while also wishing that it was a Toyota built car. I would have been happy to wait a couple more years for Toyota to make their own MkV, but that's not what Toyota wanted to do. You can like the car while still wanting more or having critiques of it.

The other mindset that never made sense to me is when you see people trying to act like they know everything about the business behind making cars and therefore are qualified to explain why Toyota was stupid to partner with BMW and 100% totally could have done it on their own and achieved a perfect MkV. We can speculate all day as to what it would take to create a MkV and what it would have cost, but to try and pass these things off as facts just makes them look ignorant. It's really sad to see that a lot of the hate comes from MkIV people, and many of them don't even own a MkIV. The existence of the MkV doesn't invalidate the MkIV, and if you want a MkIV, go out and buy one.

I'm sure there are many people who would have found a reason to bash the MkV even if it was released looking exactly like the FT-1 with a 500hp Toyota I-6 and a dual-clutch transmission or manual and cost $70k.

I just got back from the movies. We walked out and a guy with the white Lexus rc-f was parked next to me. Stared at me and didn’t say one word. Another guy with a Jeep Rubicon came up and said how do you like the new Supra? And said, isn’t that made by BMW? Lol

I wonder, how are the German/BMW guys taking all the hatred and disses of them building this Supra? Are they any offended that they're "not good enough to be a Toyota?"

That’s why I have a BMW license plate frame. That way I can point and say that even the damn license plate frame says BMW on it. Have a little fun with it. Better than saying at least it’s not a Jeep.

Yeah, I'm planning on putting an "M Powered" license plate frame on mine just as a subtle middle finger to the haters... but honestly, I get tons more thumbs up from random people on the street than anything else. I'd expect it from some of the hardcore Toyota fans... but really, that's a bit too easy to respond to. I'm right there with them wishing Toyota would have developed and released the FT-1 as a production car... but considering that would have cost at least $120K (likely more) then it would be something I admired but couldn't justify. I'd much rather have a slightly less super Supra, and actually own and drive one every day.

I've never been as happy as I was the day I took my overweight, problematic and lifeless "legitimate Toyota performance car" ('16 RC-F) and traded it in on my Supra. Sure reliability remains to be seen... but it's been many years since I've seen anything I'd call "bulletproof" from Toyota... and that's from 3 Lexus and 3 Toyota models.

Honestly, the best parts of the Supra are the BMW parts IMO. Sure I love the handling and I think it looks pretty good (with the exception of the fake vents everywhere)... but the drivetrain and the interior - both of which are better than I had in an $80K "pure" Toyota offering - is what really puts the smiles on my face. If BMW sold it as a Z4 Coupe... I would still have the same car... just from a different dealership.

Bought my wife the new 2020 RX350... and every time we take my car she comments on how much she loves the seats and wishes hers were half as nice. :D

bought mine in Oct and daily drive it. since then a pretty wide range of love/hate:

Love:
Get thumbs up and honks in traffic regularly.
People walk up pretty regularly in parking lots and ask about and say it looks great.
Driving around see tons of head turns and hear people saying "Hey that's the new Supra..." as I pass by.
Had a group of high school kids literally stop in traffic and jump out of their 4-Runner cheering and hooting and hollering. Was pretty weird but positive I guess.
Neighbors/coworkers have had a lot of complimentary things to say about it and many asking for ride along.
Saw out the window of the gym last week, some teenage boy having his girlfriend pose for pictures in front of it.

Hate:
Second day I had it, had a guy in a huge-ass diesel truck try to race me up a freeway onramp and then tried to run me onto the shoulder. Had to slam on the brakes to avoid collision. Was still in breakin and frankly...don't give 2 sh*ts about racing some a-hole in his truck.
Two weeks in, had someone spit chew spit on the front quarter panel in commuter traffic on my way home from work.
Had some guy walking with his wife call out "Hey honey...look...its the new Z4" in a sarcastic tone.
Have 20-somethings (oddly...always driving mustangs, lol) constantly pulling up and revving or posturing in traffic.
Have had about half a dozen people say "You having a midlife crisis or something?" in a critical tone (I'm nearly 50 and have always drive pretty utilitarian vehicles). So I just say "Hell yeah". Worked my ass off for years and going to enjoy every minute.

I'm too old to really give a sh*t anymore. BMW makes great cars. This is a collaboration and likely wouldn't have been produced if that weren't the case...or would be too expensive otherwise. The car looks great and is a blast to drive. It has tons of potential for upgrades which makes it have a big "life after purchase" value for me.
