But on a serious note I think it was a good idea for Toyota to not to show it at Detroit. The rumored C8 or mid-engine Corvette would have for sure stolen the limelight.

The waiting game is too long for the new supra. Hopefully during all of this time, Toyota will develop the supra to be something that won't disappoint.

Well, if there is to be a 340hp SPX named Celica and a 400hp GRMN/TRD Supra as the new SF rumor details, that explains why the Spec-A mule has been the main car testing and why it was shown in Copenhagen.

This throws all sorts of wrenches into the release timeline though because now do we get the Celica next year, does it release alongside the Supra in 2019, or does the Supra come later that 2019?

Also, that's one fast, pricey Celica by historical standards lol.

I could see this happening along with many other things. But I don't know; I feel like most have been awaiting the return of the 'Supra' to this point and not really the Celica although a Celica is always welcome to join the line up in my book. Just having a similar car with 2 different names is odd even though I know that is how the Supra originated. I mean why not just brand both models a Supra and the top level Supra SE or Type R or TRD Supra or something along those lines. Like the Corvette with ZR1 or Porsche 911 with the GT3 / GT2 RS. Just my opinion but hopefully both trim levels come in 6 cyl. only.

If true, this suggests that Toyota wants a very clear product differentiation between the two cars - with the Celica being slotted in at the level of the 370Z and the GRMN up there with the Vettes. Potentially great news for those of us hoping the base version will be more modest and affordable than some of the numbers being thrown around would suggest.

At first, I was thinking why the hell would you have two nameplates for the same chassis, with the same motor, just different power levels and mods/tune. Why not have Supra and Supra GRMN in the same way that other manufacturers have special models following similar ideologies.

But then it occurred to me that this could allow them to have a ~40k car and a ~60k car, which would indeed be a wise move as the Z doesn't have much competition and its old. Toyota would also then have the 3 sports car line-up they have desired as of late (86/Celica/Supra).

Dunno. Aside from the last info dump that I got lucky with, it's gotten much harder to get the engineers to talk about changes to the car, and Guff echoed that he was having the same issue on the Toyota USA side which means we are now finally getting into the thick of things where product planners actively track down leaks and try to control the flow of all information to the public. With that comes the engineers having to be far more hush-hush on things. In fact, one of Tada's best friends, who I also know, hardly even talks to him about the project anymore because he said he cant give out info anymore.

I guess in that regard I've more or less outlived my usefulness and will likely be just as in the know as everyone else when these leaks from dealer meetings and other things I'm not privy to come out.

It would be sacrilegious to have a 4 cyl on a supra but because the celica will be distinct from the supra i think it would not be so bad after all to have a 4 cyl on the low spec model . It would come with a manual too , so i think it would fill a nice spot , also the celicas of the past had all 4 cyl plus the 2.0 T engines of today have both performance and low emmissions for the european regulations for example. I know it is not for production but still at i would welcome it in the light of the recent news.

Don't disagree with your analysis here, but one big problem I see with any kind of 4 banger use is getting an exciting, beautiful sound out of the car, and to me that is a major factor in buying a sportscar. Even Porsche with all its expertise and money could not make it work with the Cayman/Boxster when they dropped down to 4 cylinders from 6. I bet their sales will take a hit as a result.

I've test driven a fair number of fours recently - MX-5, the twins, Golf R, Fiat 124 Abarth, Civic Si, Focus ST - and none of them came close to the wonderful howl of the 6 in the 370Z on hard acceleration. A few like the Golf R were not terrible but the artificial augmentation of their sound gave it a synthetic feel. And aftermarket fixes like catbacks aren't the answer - they just make a 4 banger sound more ricey to my ears.

I like the 4G63, 3SGTE, 2ZZ, and F20/22C, but those are all ancient at this point. Most of the new stuff is pretty bleh...
