Came back home yesterday late night :)
Was a very fun weekend, driving around on the small roads in France.

Limp mode
Circuit driving... limp mode all after 7-10 minutes for the Supra.
Still running her in, so only gave it 40-50% throttle and only went to 4-5K RPM.

So we have some investigation to do why the car goes into limp mode. Everything was logged in ECUTEK at the car just reduces the torque levels by 94% (really not giving me a lot of power to continue on the track).

But could still do fast corners. And as it is a racetrack where you don't have a lot of very fast sections (besides the 1.1Km straight and one uphill), in the end still had lots of fun.

Guess the restriction
At this moment, we don't have a clue where the restriction is for the limp mode.. but my guess would be somewhere in the cooling (as I heard lots of other supra MKV run in that problem after upgraded turbo on the track).
Because after a 40 minute cooldown (between sessions)... I could do again 7-10 minutes untill limp mode arrives once again :)

Last year done the same track with my supra when it was 100% standard and I never ran into problems. Even the track was at that time 25 degrees celcius and sunny. This weekend was only 19 degrees and cloudy.

Pictures
Below some pictures of the weekend. Will post some more once the photographers release their pictures :)

Looked like a great weekend aside from limp mode.
Is that a z4 parked next to you in last photo?
Yeah it is my forth time in a row doing the event (twice with my R33 GT-R, twice with the Supra).
As you can see, international event. People from Great-Britain, France, Belgium, Netherlands,...

And yes that is indeed a Z4 parked next to mine :)

That looks awesome, no wonder you went to so much trouble to get there

Each year... great experience yes. During that weekend, I can really enjoy the car at its best.

Two preview pictures from the track:

I'm jealous of the beautiful surroundings and the obviously fun weekend in general... but those temps make me really jealous right now!

I'm not surprised you didn't have problems when it was 100% stock at those temps... I'm not hitting limp mode in my commute in 43C air - figure the roads are likely above 50C! Although far less stressful for the engine than a track day obviously, since it's high speed all the way (until the radar detector goes off at least). ;)

Did you find the cause of the limp mode and is the new engine ok?
Maybe the tune could be what caused the old engine to fail?
Pure speculation but curious.
No did not find yet what caused the limp mode.
Up untill now... the engine is still holding haha :D

Normally should not be the tune that caused it... as we are still conservative on boost/torque/... but who knows it is a combination of things.
Toyota Europe still did not provide feedback on the matter either (engine failure & oil interval)

I am still doubting the oil change interval. So I have an appointment with my Toyta dealer on the 14th of September to do maintenace and oil change. And I will be performing each 7.5K-10K kilometers an oil & filter change.

During this winter when we have again dyno time... we will try and figure it out. But a lot of things are still coming int his build ;)

:)

I am also not hitting limp mode on the normal roads when doing a pull. As you mentioned... it is less stressful for the engine and on the road... it has the time to cool down during pulls.

My mate (who drives the white supra on the pictures) has his Supra stage1 tuned till 480HP and was not running into limp mode.
We both go to the same tuner... but he also did not push his supra as hard as I did on the track.

What I noticed during track:
  • oil temperature at the filter: 106-108 degrees celcius (but raises till 112-115 degrees celcius)
  • engine oil temperature: 94-95 degrees celcius
  • engine temperature: 87-90 degrees celcius (but raises till 96-100 degrees celcius)
  • Intake temperatures before throttle: 87-97 degrees celcius (but raises till 147 degrees celcius)
  • intake air temperature: 35-40 degrees celcius
  • average coolant temperature: 87-89 degrees celcius (but can reach 95-100 degrees celcius)
  • gearbox temperatures: 76-78 degrees celcius
  • radiator outlet temperature: 55-60 degrees celcius (but raises till 68-78 degrees celcius)
Seeing those numbers... I see we are hitting coolant problems.
Unless other people say this is quite normal to keep it up for 20 minutes track sessions and cooling down till next session 40 minutes later :)

Geert,

Are you running the air conditioner whilst tracking, otherwise my hunch is going for better track oil to keep engine temps down.

Yes I do. And yes after around 3/4th of the session... the air conditioner can't keep up anymore and it gets warm in the car.

Sticking currently here to the 'gazoo racing 0W20 SN C5' oil:
  • Main reason: we are not sure yet what happened to the engine + 0.0 feedback from Toyota
  • 99% of the time it is a daily, so driving the recommended oil

We are looking into decreasing the temperatures, but that will be somewhere for during the winter :)

I have started to notice a correlation.
Those who track and have air co on, will eventually run into limp mode.
Any chance to race without air co on or windows down or is it too uncomfortable?
