Haha, someday I'll talk more about it, but it's actually two platforms I'm part of and they're sort of related.
But anyhow, that's for another time.
The Akio era will be remembered for a lot of passion when passion was dying everywhere else.
the trickle down effect of tech is a component for sure, and they want to minimize losses as much as they can; both are true. the main objective however is indeed marketing and specifically Akio wanting a Toyota halo car. if money is made, that's ideal, but if money is lost then so be it.

I think GX was on track for a refresh in 2019 iirc, but I havent seen or heard anything else internally. the 4 Runner was supposed to get an update this year or last (cant remember) and it never happened, so Toyota is a little behind on schedules.

Small changes can end up changing everything; the Butterfly Effect so to speak.
It's a tough one for me because I like the way I6 are balanced, sound, and how easy they are to work on.
but I also like V6 because they're much easier to get further back into the chassis. the CE of the R33/R34 GTR wanted to put the VQ30DETT (well, an evolution of it) into the R34 GTR in order...
Will never happen as they love the V6 as much as the next company.
I love the I6, but even I understand how silly they are from a packaging perspective. That said, if anyone was going to do it, it would be Lexus, but they've already sunk a ton into a few other drivetrain options I'm not free to...
