The world of automotive inventions and patents is nothing if not complicated. Reading through this lengthy application Toyota filed to the US Patent & Trademark Office back in January, we think we understand what’s going on here. Of course, we welcome you to check out the application for yourself, because we’d love to get your feedback on whether this is a novel idea, or an attempt to fix a nonexistent problem.

As far as we can tell, the patent involves an electronic control unit that can operate the clutch and gearbox of a proper manual transmission, by which we mean a car with three separate pedals and a lever in the middle to change gears by hand. When activated, the control unit can automatically disengage the clutch when the car is coasting, but it can also operate the gearbox to take the car out of gear. As such, it can also actuate a series of lock pins that would prevent the driver from shifting to a gear too low or too high given the vehicle’s speed.

In other words, it would keep all you boy racers from executing high-rpm downshifts just to hear the exhaust pop. On the other side of the coin, it would keep you manual transmission newbies from accidentally going to third gear instead of first as you coast to a stoplight, saving you from a very embarrassing stall in front of the entire world.

TOYOTA DEVELOPING MANUAL GEARBOX THAT ACTS LIKE AN AUTO

Toyota look to be in the midst of developing a manual that can act like an automatic in order to save petrol.

A patent published this month by the world's biggest car maker shows off a new sort of gearbox that looks predominantly manual, but can engage the characteristics of an automatic presumably to save on fuel.

It is operated in a traditional, three pedal way, but when the car is coasting an electronic control unit can disengage the clutch and drop engine speed in order to increase efficiency.

It will also employ locking pins to stop the driver shifting into an inappropriate gear while coasting. This will prevent the engine either being lugged or over-revved.

As it stands, the gearbox is still yet to be confirmed as "in existence." A patent certainly says a lot but until Toyota show it off and say it will be used in so-and-so cars, we'll have to hold off on too much excitement for the future of the stick shift - just in case.

Toyota's upcoming Supra rebirth has so far only had BMW-sourced automatic gearboxes attached to it, according to leaked documents. Of course these are unconfirmed, but maybe Toyota was holding off on going concrete with a manual until this new transmission was well on the way? We'll have to wait and see.

Did OP even read the article? The first paragraph clearly states our forum as the source. So one with common sense would think it has already been posted.

According to a BMW model code document obtained by the SupraMkV forum, the new Toyota Supra will only be available with an automatic transmission.

That is what I'm hoping for. Maybe that is another reason why it didn't show up on the BMW code list?

I have no clue. It think it will totally depend on the trim (if there are multiple choices). Also, if dealerships have no restrictions from Toyota directley, expect some insane markups like weve seen on the new Civic type Rs.

My plan is to just expect it to be pretty high, keep saving, and wait until a year has passed after its releas. By then the markup hype should die down a little and any major mechanical flaws from the first year model will hopefully be sorted out.
