Hi,

Recently purchased a Gold certified pre owned 2021 supra. Within 2000 miles of ownership, from having a full oil reading, I received low oil light. I then replaced 1 qt, drove for a week, then brought it to the dealership for a full service. I then drive 1400 miles, and have burned 1/2 a quart. The total mileage is ~13,000. I believe this is severe oil consumption, and I have not dealt with the process of lemon law, or engine/car replacement from Toyota. Can someone point me to resources for how to handle this

Thanks

It's hard to asses oil consumption over relatively low mileages such as you are doing The more accurate indication is over longer periods such as 5000 mile increments at least. This engine doesn't make it any easier not having a dipstick and a system that seemingly doesn't indicate any quantity of oil that's been overfilled within reason so assessing the correct full level is problematic to a degree. I guess the best way is to drain the oil and short fill it and do a level check that will show the under filled %age then top it off from there until it shows 100% then start a 5000 mile consumption test. Having said all that as far as BMW are concerned with consumption figures you have indicated you don't have an issue. Someone posted the factory consumption figures here a short time ago and they were the same as all manufacturers advise IE a lot more than people are prepared to accept in the main. Factory oil consumption figures are biased far more towards reduced warranty claims than they are as a statement of what's generally acceptable for an engine with decent condition bores and oil control. In my opinion you shouldn't need to add any oil between 10,000 mile oil service intervals in any decent condition road engine. So for the most part 1 litre or 1 Qt every 10,000 miles or 15,000 Klm is acceptable. The only car I've owned thats used more than that was a Gen111 chev engine in a SS Commodore I owned and typically Holden said it was fine but me and every other owner suffering the oil consumption and piston slap issue disagreed and eventually it led to a world wide recall on those engines. GM eventually admitted they fucked up with low tension rings and poor piston clearance control. Every other car I've owned in the last 25 years has used around a 1/2 to 3/4 of a quart between 10,000 mile service intervals.
Carrying around a litre of oil in the trunk of the car to top off the oil during a road trip in this day and age is a joke in reality but people accept it. You can try arguing with Toyota but I don't think you'll have much joy. Just my opinion and experiences. Good luck with it.

The main purpose of this thread was to get information about how to get it handled by Toyota, not *if* other people have the same problem.

I will not make it to 5,000 miles without having to add at least 1 qt. Im not measuring it purposely over small distances. Im almost positive this is not normal, having owned performance cars in the past without any oil consumption, even stage 2+. So this is very worrisome and annoying

I've ordered bimmerlink and ODB setup, so I can log my MM to present my evidence if needed. When I went to the Toyota dealership, they refused to document the first top off.

Measuring the oil consumption over a 1400 mile period you mentioned is a short distance and measuring the consumption over a 5000 mile distance doesn't mean you won't be adding any oil it means you will be logging the oil additions you make over that distance. How Toyota respond is tightly linked to how many other people experience the same issue in pretty much all cases of faults with a vehicle. One off customer problems get blown off pretty much but many many customers with the same issue gets their attention. Better to go to Toyota with plenty of historical information than nothing.
Plenty of research and ammunition for an argument is required.

You actually burned 1 full quart in 1400 miles. When adding 6.8 quarts after an oil change the level is 1/2 quart above the full line on the digital oil indicator. So when you see 1/2 a quart gone you’ve consumed 1 full quart.

No worries. Toyota will want you to have them do a consumption check that they monitor so they will have you come in periodically for them to check the levels which is fair enough but it's in your best interests to show them your own data over a decent mileage to get their attention on the matter.

In that case, I'm well under the tech spec from the manual. Just made the service appt...

This should help as well, these are the oil levels and how they correspond to the iDrive screen:

- 100% (6.6 liters) = 97mm
- 100% (iDrive max) = 97-85mm
- 75% = 84mm
- 50% = 82mm
- 25% = 81mm
- 0% (iDrive min) = 78mm (add 1 quart)

Like I stated before, I log my oil level in mm whenever I am on track or if checking my oil level. Here was what I was when sitting in the hot lane after the track was black flagged. I was on a slight incline so it's showing higher by a little bit. On normal level ground, at operating temp, I am usually 94-97mm when properly filled.

I clearly have engine problems then. Sad
I wouldn’t fret it. You’ll find the issue. Have you tried running Motul X-cess 5W30 or thicker oil?
