Hello all,

I wanted to see if anyone knows the answer to this question

If I were to purchase a BRAND NEW Supra outside of California and register it to California as first owner, will I be
exempt from California smog for 8 years?

I think it should be good per this page:
https://www.bar.ca.gov/Consumer/Smog_Check_Program/FAQ

However, just wanted to know to cover all of my bases.

Thanks in advance

EDIT:
According to the link it needs to be smog once, but then after that I should be good for 8 years, right?

I can't speak to the eight years, but you will have to get it SMOG'd to register it in California even though it is brand new.

California has very strict smog rules compared to other states. You should check dmv.ca.gov. That link you provided does not cover cars brought in from other states.

I just had to have my 2013 Prius smog tested. First time ever.

well that makes sense...
2013 + 8
you're going to have to get it smog tested regardless if you're going to register it in CA unless you register it out of state and even that is pretty sketchy eventually.

Every year you don't have to smog your car in CA, there is a smog abatement fee. It's like CA would charge you the fee for the smog check, but you really don't have to do it. As long as they get their fee.

My brother recently purchased a brand new vehicle (from a dealership) outside of CA and then registered it here. He said it was a pain. Not only does it have to pass smog but you will have to take it to the chp ref to get a vin verification done. That's where the problem is cause the ref is going to be quite the wait.

But as everyone else has said, when ca doesn't exist in 8 years, your first smog will be due, as long as you pay for the abatement.

Doesn't the dealership charge a fee for sending to DMV I'm trying to register it in?

Or they just give me a temp plate and off I go?

The dealership should send it to the DMV. I believe that should be part of the docs fee they charge.

It's more of a hassle buying outside of California and trying to get it registered here. As you need it to get it ref'd and that's a PITA on top of getting smogged as well and THEN paying the taxes on the difference of where you bought the vehicle NEW.
Better to just buy the car here and not worry about any of that for 6-8 years.

If you can save a few thousand dollars buying out of state, that is well worth it. Getting it smogged is $60 plus CHP verification of the VIN, and pay the tax you normally would pay (which will be less since your car is less)
