Could be purge valve. could be fuel cap not tight. To be for sure smoke the evap system.

I think I've read that the venting line with leak diagnosis module is also a known failure point.

That black plastic hose that runs across the manifold, and connects to a fitting on the front driver side of the manifold...

Follow that hose and make sure all the plugs, hoses, and fittings are secure. The hose goes under the car by the driver wheel well (down rear of engine), and over the front of the engine towards the passenger side. That is the evap system. Your code may be coming from here.

Check the the evap line connections under the hood to be safe, but it may just be the fuel cap not sealing properly.

I had that code pop up periodically the first year or so I had the car, and I'm pretty sure it was just from my dumb ass pressing into it too much when putting the cap on. Having some older jdm cars and others with fuel caps that work differently had me in that habit. The bmw cap you just want to line up and then turn all the way and it will seal/click in, no need to put pressure on it.

I had the same code before, and I fixed it by replacing the fuel cap for $15. I personally believe the $15 is worth the chance of fixing it.

@SavagePassenger brings up a good point. I was also pushing down on the cap when putting it back on, which is probably how it started leaking in the first place.
