I took recordings before and after replacing my OEM catback. Pretty sizable difference in volume with OEM downpipe still in place. However, I don’t think most valved catbacks are 3.5” like the one I ended up with. So that probably makes a difference here.

Also, I’d steer clear of Dinan. Their parent company Holly is absolutely horrible. Fought with them to get my money back on a lost shipment (Dinan catback). Ultimately had to dispute the charge with my credit card company.
I didn't know they still offered that. I was looking at that last year as well. I love that it looks pretty much OEM from the rear.

Unfortunately they don’t. As far as I know I got the last one. They took the product page down right after I ordered it. It’s a bummer because I think it’s a really good system. Sounds good all the time, and much louder with the valve open.

+1 for Dinan. No experience with the others, but bought it because of price and I liked the design.

The exhaust flap opens in normal mode above 4k rpm (lower in higher gears) so that’s probably showing up in @concept ‘s decibel test. There’s a definite difference in normal driving situations with the stock downpipe and Dinan catback.

I ran with the stock downpipe for a year and just installed a catted downpipe - the difference between normal and sport is much more pronounced now. Almost no difference in normal mode but much louder in sport now.

I didn't know that the valve opens in Normal mode. Thanks for that. It could be that my valve opened before that engine speed.

Oh yeah I tracked in BimmerLink a while back. It’s roughly 2nd gear >4k, 3rd gear >3.75k, 4th >3.5k, 5th >3.25k and 6th >3k. Not sure about 1st gear or neutral.

I can show you the exact tables so you don't have to guess. ;)

Nice! My car has the ZF 8 auto, and I'm not sure if the CA referee station puts the drive wheels on rollers to test exhaust sound levels. I recorded sound levels while in neutral.

Haha that would be great - I honestly hadn’t seen much mentioned about it online but noticed the flap open % change while driving with BimmerLink open one time and decided to watch it during my commute the next week.

Dinan is a great option.

Sounds great, more volume, reasonably priced, and you retain the valve.

Another +1 for dinan. Couldn't be happier only issue i have is that the valve never fully closes and leaves a small gap but this is either due to the valve being maybe not 100% welded straight or my valve controller not being calibrated as the spring to attach the two was so tight that I thought it would snap the thick spring. But I did buy it used off another member so who knows. But overall I like the quality of the exhaust and the little extra sound on start up.

It’s a two speed idle test. They rev to a lower RPM then higher RPM. Forgot the specific numbers. And no they don’t put you on the dyno for that.

Mine doesn’t fully shut either but I don't think that’s any different than stock… but maybe I didn’t install the spring right or something.

AWE touring but its non valved.
Valved I'd say Borla.

Other valved choices: Ark Performance, Dinan, HKS, MBRP, AFE, Akrapovic. I still think Borla will be the most aggressive.

Can help you with either.
I heard some Borla exhausts on video and it honestly did not sound as loud or aggressive as I thought.
