Extra Miles After Service

My car was held up at the local dealership for the brake recall since Friday.

Picked it up today drove to work (about a 5 mile drive) and noticed there is an additional 30miles on it.

Is this normal? It's really no big deal just wondering if its as they may have needed to with the break recall.

Just on the edge my local dealership as I have had a few issues with them since getting the car.

Yes normal for dealers to take customer cars out for personal lunches, "test drives" with friends, etc. etc.

This is why dealers usually never see my cars after sale.

I bring my car into the dealer all the time, but because of this, I leave the engine at home.

Ask them point blank about it. It's normal for a post-service/repair test drive for QC purposes, but not a long one. You signed a legal document allowing them to drive the vehicle, but there's a large gray area between what's proper professional and what's joyriding nonsense.

They definitely took your car for a joy ride. Nothing even needs to be tested in the road following that recall

30 miles sounds like a proper joyride, not whatever distance they do testing for calibration/verification of their work.

That’s too many extra miles. Let us know which dealership so people can stay clear of them.

Wow, yeah I would be pissed off.

Another reason why I note the mileage on the car with the service writer and make sure to document not to wash it.

I then also write down the mileage and stick it on the dash with MILEAGE IN and a big sign on that says DO NOT WASH.

I also buy the service guy and the tech some donuts,brownies, etc to let them know I'm not being an Ahole, but rather being cautious.

To be honest, with this car, try to avoid the dealer at all costs if you can - they do not see many of them and everything about it is BMW and not Toyota, so its an outlier.

I'd definitely write them a review about your negative experience. As someone who's family is heavily involved in a dealership for a long time, any negative review makes the higher ups working absolutely mad.

30 miles is way too many for anything that a dealership would need to do. 2-3 miles can be explained for QC purposes. 30 miles.... nope.

That is correct about using the car as a lunch transport. I worked at a exotic car dealer down in miami and we would keep one finished car and use it to go for lunch. It seemed no one cared. At one time a customer called and said he saw his car being driven down biscane blvd. It was true and they never questioned me about it. This was a long time ago but yes you would be shocked if you found out that the repair only took 1 hour and the car was held up for a week. You will always get the responce that we are waiting for parts or somthing like that.

They sure do, as it is part of the RO. However I mention it to them that I am aware of the mileage on the car and nobody should be driving it.

They have to give you an initial copy of the work order before they so much as move the car in the drive, and the precise intake mileage MUST be on it. The exact mileage out must also be on the final copy.

I can't tell you how many dealerships I've caught taking my car for a test drive it didn't need, or just straight up caught them in a lie.

That's why the first thing I install on every car I buy is a dashcam.

To note, I do all my own aftermarket work and my car never sees the inside of a shop unless it's something I can't do myself... like warranty bs.
