i’m trying to flash my car back to stock to do smog

so i flashed my car back to stock and it was successful, but the car won't start. Now when I flash it back to stage 2 on the stock map it starts good.

I have the battery on a trickle, unplugged battery terminal for 10 min and re-tried, reset dme, and even tried the "force flash and unclock" option a couple times.

I followed all the precautions, charged battery, closed door, seatbelt on, headlights off

I wasn't able to find help online about it so maybe someone here could help.

You should reach out to ProTuning freaks for help. The good news is that you can drive the car with Stage 2.

You're going to have another issue with Emissions however, as the BM3 stock map is not the one that came with your car, its just stock OEM parameters, and from what I understand CA performs a checksum verification, which the BM3 OEM map will not match.

Why are you trying to flash back to the stock map? What parameters are you trying to set to READY?

I thought CA gets 8 years before you have to Emissions/Smog test?

I should add that I had this exact problem with my car when I was trying to flash to BM3 for the first time after I had my DME back from Femto, but I was using my phone to perform the flashing.

When I used a laptop with OBD to Ethernet cable I was able to flash with no issues.

I can't even flash the car with the phone app after the last update. It bricked my ECU. Every time they update their mobile app, something breaks. It's really frustrating.

I can flash with zero issues via laptop and ENET cable so I will just do that from now on.

I don't believe CA does check sums, rather it compares CID and CVN.

So I went on the app and converted my stock tune to a custom rom and it work, flashed successfully and drove. So i went to try and get it smogged but it still came up as “modified software” on their end.

is there anything i can do, is my only option flashing to stock at the dealer? will this lock my ecu and then I can’t tune it? my car is a 23

You’re right, converted to custom rom on the stock tune and it still came up as modified software for the smog guys. Reason is I finished fixing it from the auction and now I need to get it smogged to register it because it’s rebuilt.

Converting a stock tune to custom rom changes not only the CVN, it changes the ROM ID. So two flags.

Also, BM3 must have changed something recently as my car won't even register as having a cat (even with Cat tables set to OEM) or evap with custom rom, so the readiness checks never get set correctly, so even here in NY, I can't pass with a custom rom. I have to us a OEM ROM *not* converted to custom rom. Luckily, I can still set it for Dorch HPFP, S58 injectors and delete the PVC heater CEL. If not, I would have to return all that crap to stock which would absolutely suck to have to do every 12 months.

Ok, what you need to do then is to make an appointment with Toyota to have the DME reflashed to OEM specifications, make sure you have it documented and have the documentation given to you by Toyota that you did this task.

You will then need to retest.

Your only hope in California SMOG Testing is either having a second DME that is copied/cracked or using a JB4 OR having a Montana LLC and having your car registered in it, but as I understand it they cracked down on that too.

Just last week, I updated Bootmod on the laptop and reflashed my MultiMap Stage 2 and set the Catalyst to "OEM" and the Catalyst Preheat to "OEM" and all my monitors are set to "READY" as I now went to an AMS GESI High Flow Cat.

Let me know if you need to compare anything software or car wise to yours for help.

Yup, did all that. Not sure why my ROM ID has been so odd. I have a ton of logging issues too. It's made me want to move to MHD. It's just that MHD doesn't have all the tables I want/need.

Thanks all for the help, so is there anyway bm3 can send me an OEM tune and so that the smog station won’t have it come up as “modified software” the dealer says they don’t flash to stock? why are they bullshitting

I doubt bm3 can spoof the calibration ID and the calibration verification number.

You'll have to ISTA update it yourself if you cant get a dealer to update it for you.

Get it emissions ready, pass emissions, then send it back to femto for an unlock.

No, unlocked ECU even without MHD, BM3 or whatever will always get flagged. The CID, CVN will all flag.

Has to be a locked, OEM spec DME.

You can ask them to do the data comm recall if you haven't had it yet. That would update it to OEM spec and lock it again.

BTW why do you need smog in California? Isn’t it too early for that?
