So, have had the Yaris from new in '21. 70,000km. Supra for ten days and 3200km. Always was going to keep both, thinking where they fit in. Some early observations.
Getting in and out. Yaris>>>Supra, no need to say more.
Comfort Supra>Yaris. In comfort mode, that is. smoother ride and less road noise. Nothing badly wrong with the Yaris, both have good supportive seats.
Luggage - Yaris can take a set of wheels with rear seat down. Harry Metcalfe calls his a van with the rear seat always down. Supra can take all the luggage we want for touring. Don't play golf so set of clubs irrelevant but looks tricky in both.
Space for odds and ends - not great in the Supra, as expected, Yaris a little better but still has awkward cupholders by your elbow.
Rear seat passengers - well adults have travelled short distances in the back of the Yaris. 8 year old complained she couldn't see out. Supra - nil obvs.
Front seat passengers - no grab handles in the Supra. Slightly surprising omission.
Controls - nothing to add to what others say, I like the rotating controller in the Supra, less reaching for touchscreen and cubby fingermarks. had similar in a Mazda previously and like it, there are other opinions. Reassuringly loud cling for the indicators in the Supra.
Steering wheel - Supra steering wheel is curiously thin on top and thick elsewhere, I like thinner myself. I think 9will measure) that the Yaris wheel is smaller but thick.
Pedals - Supra > Yaris. Placement of pedals in the Yaris ,making heel and toe tricky ha been written about. On the other hand may choose not to wear the wide Skechers driving the Supra.
Yaris has a proper handbrake for tight corners ;-)
Engine - both great in their own way. Supra drives like a straight six with a flat torque curve. Yaris has more low down torque than you would expect. Both come on song up the rev range (not yet explored much in the Supra).
Gearbox - Supra has the slightly rubbery feel I expected. Yaris is crisper with the exception of 2nd gear which can be a little balky. Known issue and apparently attention to engine mounts and cables makes it better. Supra I expect will get cleaner with use.
Driving generally - Yaris sticks to the road like glue with PS4s tyres. 4WD does what it should and does it well. Steering a little dull on the turn in though. Supra, steering feels sharper and generally cleaner. Have not yet explored grip, as I expected so far.
One thing, I was driving Supra yesterday after a shower and when the wheels hit a puddle on one side of the road I felt it through the steering. Probably a plus, nothing scary but noticeable. Living in the tropics we get a lot of rain and the Yaris has been the preferred car in the wet on tarmac. Probably will continue to be. Its a rally car (sort of) after all.
Reactions on the road - not many people spot the Yaris as being anything special. So far the Supra has had attention from others, including people in Utes and P platers who want to drag away from the lights - I let them get on with it. Bestwas a chat with a young lad, aroudn 10, who started off saying he hadn't seen many and was up on the technical detail.
So, two great cars, both fun and competent. I'll probably use the Yaris as daily driver round town, smaller and so on. Though it has a slightly longer wheelbase than the Supra which is interesting. Pretty much a wheel at each corner.
