Without leading us further off topic, I just want to mention: I have done an IMS bearing repair on a 987 Cayman, and it was such a massive pain in the ass. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

Guff, you donā€™t know what pain is until you have owned and wrenched on a Z32. I made up new swear words because of the VG30.

We should rename this thread in ā€žWhat would I buy if the new Supra is too expensive?ā€œ.

And please donā€™t loose attention on spare parts and repair prices. ;)

I had a '91 300ZX and people (dumb people) mistook it for a Ferrari, Lamborghini, Lotus, etc, fairly often. To be fair, it didn't look like any of those cars, but it stood out like those cars do.
You had to go there didn't you....:nono:

All 996 - 997.1 GT2, GT3 and Turbo models use the Mezger engine, which does not have an IMS and is a pretty bulletproof engine (coolant hoses aside). Those are the ones to get.

997.2 GT2, GT3, GT3 and race car (Cup/RSR) continued to use the Mezger engine, but the Turbo moved to the newer, cheaper to build DI engines.

No 991 received the Mezger engine, except the race cars.
This is exactly why I went with a 2009 specifically (Porsche changed the Epoxy on the pipes, Last turbo Mezger Engine, Last Manual Turbo built by Porsche before the VAG buyout unless you had GT2 money)
Mine is a 09', TT, 6spd, White on Red, 1 of 3 built for the US and 1 of 5 for NA. With bottoming economy in 2008 its also one of the lowest production years for the 997.1 ever!

BTW the market for 997.1 TT cars is on fire, no deals to be had unless you buy a higher mile car. 996's are beginning to appreciate so jump soon...

Ever since I got a chance to ride in my co-workers 997TT, I have been glued to the computer this whole week looking for good 997TT examples. I have been in fast cars (1000hp Supra's, 1000hp Vipers, etc...) but none of those cars felt comfortable and confident at high speeds like the 911. I seriously am in love with this car now....and am leaning more towards the 911 than the GTR. A used 997TT with very low mileage and in excellent shape 6spd is going for $67k to $77k. AMS Performance has a 900whp package that isn't too badly priced.

Do you do any maintenance yourself on the car?

Only low optioned cars in silver, black and red, go for $67-77k. Most nicer cars are now $80-95k. My car has all the GT2 bits, and makes 600whp, plenty of fun for the street!
I do my own maintenance, no issues other then a coolant temp sensor for $29 and about 2hrs of my time. Oil changes are no worse then any other high end car. $100 in materials (9qts of Oil).

The 07-08 3.6 motor will need the coolant pipes pinned or welded, its a engine out job, and best to do coils and injectors at the same time. Most owners are sissys and pay for all wrenching.

There is a tax for a lot of parts though, exhaust, inlet pipes, clutches, etc... I run a UMW tuner, way better then a COBB canned tune IMO. Unless you go COBB and use a tuner like Emre to Dyno Tune your car.

Yes, however, I am not looking for the "Chronos package" or whatever else Porsche threw in for a huge markup. Black is the color of choice, and a 6spd is the only way for a 911. I saw one with 14k miles for $77k....was super clean and looked menacing as hell.

I do all the work myself on all my cars and my friends and families cars'.

Then you'll be fine! PM me if you start actively looking at them and have questions. Many have asked me what better, the MKIV or the Pcar. total Apples to Oranges!

BMW M2 and Honda S2000 - both 6MT
Well, I just purchased a BMW M2. Best car out there right now for $50k in my opinion. Dealers are starting to make deals on the 2018s before they switch to the S55 M2 Competitions for 2019. There are some used ones going for low 40s now too.

6mt of course.

I will still be on the lookout for the new Supra and might still buy one if some of the rumored specs are true!
