…is this for real? You must not have even a fundamental understanding of software development and your self entitlement is overwhelming. UNECE R155/R156 would blow your mind.

If anything, we are fortunate the barrier to entry to use ISTA is low; in contrast look into the hardware required to connect ODIS to a Volkswagen. All we need for the Supra is an inexpensive enet cable. I’m more worried about manufacturers continuing to allow the general public to acquire these tools than the minimal cost of licensing it once every few years.

ISTA has never (legitimately) been free. Any competent-BMW focused shop will be able to work on these cars.

What am I missing about my ability to care for and repair a piece of hardware that I ostensibly own outright? If that is self entitlement then I am guilty as charged. For the record, I'm not opposed to paying for software at all. I would also be happy to pay for updates but once a car is no longer in production is the software really being actively updated enough to justify a subscription? This is a gateway to planned obsolescence and forcing you to go to a dealership for any repairs. Look at what John Deere has been doing for years. The whole reason for the R155/R156 regulations existing is because the UN is concerned about continued increasing cybersecurity risks as automotive companies continue to "develop future digital revenue streams" and mine consumers data from their vehicles.

You are right. It is an overly simplistic statement trying to describe a complex situation. As a result, it is not helpful. All I'm asking for is for you to clarify what I'm missing. I am willing to learn and I know there are tons of people who understand this better than I do.

No need to be so dramatic. Nobody doing this as a hobby needs a full year subscription to it. I've used it twice and I have owned my Supra for 5 years now.

I'll admit I was feeling a bit surly when I wrote that. (Primarily because I have a BMW ISTA subscription and had just found out it would recognize my Supra but is not actually compatible.) I would just like to be able to buy a piece of software and not worry about a subscription. I know I'm not using ISTA often but on my older BMWs I do use things like bimmerlink or ISTA fairly often. I would be blown away if you had to use ISTA more than a few times in the first 5 years of the cars life but that won't always be true as these cars get older.

Then use Protool, BimmerUtility, ESYS, BimmerLink, BimmerCode. All of which you can buy outright and can do most of what ISTA can do (Approx 95% of the same for the first three) for normal repair and maintenance.

I agree with you @dAPEX. ISTA is definitely required for certain repair procedures, such as bleeding the brakes when all four corners have been opened. You cannot reliably bleed the ABS pump without ISTA, and brakes will remain mushy.

This is just one example of how a subscription-backed tool locks away valuable repair capabilities. It's shitty. It's an erosion of our consumer rights. And I don't care if it's 50 cents or 500 dollars, I take issue with the very principle of it.

Some guys are funny. The idea that a manufacturer level tool should be given out for free is peak entitlement. Claiming something absurd like “erosion of our consumer rights” around a non-consumer level tool is… I just don’t know what to say.

I’ve bled my Supra brakes probably 30x at this point. Replaced calipers with 100% dry brand new calipers, and have yet to need ISTA to do bleeding. Very rare that it would be needed unless you just keep a line open and let the system go dry, which would be a boneheaded thing to do.

My understanding was that Toyota ISTA was offered as a no cost add on to techstream (which I thought was available offline for version 14.10.033 based on all of the "bundled" cable/software packages for sale online) but I now see that the listings for the offline versions of techstream for sale online are not legit. That was based on my misunderstanding of techstream.

The fact that there is a workaround doesn't make it something we should all accept. I would prefer to be able to pay a reasonable amount for software and not have to use pirated or cracked software.

Thanks for trying to be helpful with your response. That bimmerfest ( https://www.bimmerfest.com/threads/ista-download-link-no-request.1023698/ https://www.bimmerfest.com/threads/ista-download-link-no-request.1023698/ ) download link is broken. I think it used to work but there has been an update since that makes it not able to work with the Supra. I've confirmed that with the latest version of ISTA from BMW anyway. I don't know when the updated occurred.
