I took my car to Toyota as I'm still covered under powertrain warranty.
Have a 2021 3.0 Supra with just a catless downpipe, no tune and cosmetic mods.

My oil level will not read past 15%, I have tried countless times (I'm on a flat surface and wait about 5-10 minutes to attempt the test) and from what I've seen a lot of people have failing oil pumps due to the part being plastic while the revised oil pump is made out of aluminum.

Toyota tech told me he found a code for high oil pressure which indicates my oil pump. He didn't want to proceed with any repairs until the OEM downpipe is back on which is understandable but still if it's a know issue why not start the repair.

As for the whining noise, it sounds similar to a bad alternator whining only happens at low speeds below 15mph and also when stationary giving it gas to about 1k-2.5k RPM. Happens only on the passenger side behind the dash so around the turbo area / backside of engine. I saw one post on these forums about the same noise I'm experiencing and it turned out to be the transmission and ultimately got replaced under warranty.

Today is 10/30/24, I will be taking the car back to Toyota on 11/5/24 once I put the OEM downpipe back on and hopefully get repairs started for the oil pump and an answer for the whining noise.

Thought Id make this thread to post updates on progress / how long it takes and to see what repairs Toyota makes to my car.
If anyone else has experienced a similar whining noise any input would be appreciated and has anyone been denied repairs from Toyota for similar concerns of course not being heavily modified.

Definitely the oil pump. How many miles and has the car always been in California? (I’ve seen some comments that there may be a correlation with cold weather, but nothing tangible).

You know parts of California dip below freezing right? ;)

Really surprised/disappointed to hear this is still happening on a 2021. Definitely keep us updated on how the repair goes.

Could be a bad pump, but I thought on the b58tu (2nd gen) BMW changed the oil pump back to all metal components? So the oil pump failure hasn't been an issue on any 21s and up. Oil level monitoring seems to have been a problem even when the dealership put on new pumps hoping it would fix the issue and it not.

I personally use Bimmerlink to monitor exact oil levels and oil pressure after mine stopped reading and I replaced the sensor in the pan with the same results. It's been about 9k miles since and half that is back roads. No issues, and correct pressures.

I hope you get it figured out!

The 2020 and 2021 Supra have different B58 variants in North America, but both are B58TU. “TU” refers to a generation of engines and not a specific model. The oil pump failure is also a problem for the M340i which has the same variant (B58B30O1) as the 2021+ Supra.

Observationally, the oil pump failures seem to center on early B58TU production, but that’s anecdotal with no hard data on the manufacturing range that I have been able to find. In the BMW community, 2020 is often cited as the impacted year, but I don’t think anyone truly knows yet.

It is worth noting the 2021 Supra had an unusually long window of production, starting in early 2020. So while BMW was still producing the 2020 M340i with potentially defective oil pumps the Supra was on model year 2021, with (safe assumption) those same oil pumps.

I thought the 6 port was the TU (technical update), 2 port wasn't? And the issue with plastic pump components was only in the 2 port? And they fixed it with the 6 port TU engine in the 21s and up, this isn't right?

There are 3 overarching generations of B58 categorized as B58, B58TU, and B58TU2. The first generation B58 was produced for the F-chassis and the TU began with the G-chassis. Both the 2-port (B58B30C) and 6-port (B58B30O1) in the Supra are B58TU/2nd generation. The TU2 is now in production for most of the G-chassis other than the G29/J29. That’s a bit beyond the scope of this thread, and there’s plenty of information online if you’re interested.

There are reports of oil pump failures (can’t measure, high pressure) across both TU variants. If you search Bimmerpost, you’ll see a few threads centered around the B58B30O1.

I had my oil pump replaced in September this year - MY2021 with 21k miles. ?
Let me guess… level measure failure and high pressure (if you had access to a scan tool)? :(

Edit: If you happen to know the production date of your car that would be interesting. Regardless, it’s anecdotal data gathering unless/until BMW produces a SIB outlining a manufacturing date range for affected engines.

You’re correct on the symptoms.

I believe the build date was in 07/2020 - I’ll confirm tomorrow.

In North America at least. Remember the EU still use 2-port, but I am assuming with the latest updates.
