Has anyone elected to paint their own engine cover as a diy?

The oem finish is too rough and grabs hold the microfiber when trying to wipe it off.

I was hoping to spray it with a quality rattle can (rustoleum for plastic - all in one or VHT) in a black satin paint… thus eliminating the rough surface and allowing to be easier to maintain the cleanliness of the engine bay.

Thoughts?

I attempted to but then had a guy airbrush some flames on it for old time sake. The VHT paint works fine. You will want to use the primer first and make sure there isn't too much moisture in the air when you do the clear coat or it will get milky from my experience. Hope that info helps.

That's fucking hilarious and awesome. I might spice up the old stock cover I have laying around with some hot-rod vibes.

1) Rough it up with a red scuff pad.
2) Use high-build primer, 3 coats.
3) 300 grit wet sand the primer for a flat surface.
4) VHT high temp would be best, here.

I don’t know shit about paint except that good prep work is 90% the determinant of a quality job.
Also, because I don’t know shit I might take a crack at painting the cover as an interesting activity for a day. Thanks for posting some good information guys

For a second I thought I was looking at a Mk8 Golf-R engine cover pre-recall..

Seriously though, I would love to see some more examples of a painted engine cover. Seems like a cool project!
