Does anyone have the OBD PIDs for brake pressure? I'm running race chrono and I wanna log that but I can't find the PIDs

I’m a track noob too. I’m happy with my tire choice.

I got the Continental Extreme Contact Sport 02.

is an upgrade from the Super Sport

has very similar tread quality as the PS4S

is way way more affordable than the Michelins and have rebates.

so far I have done a couple of track weekends on them and they are grippy enough to learn but also let you know when you are losing traction in the corners.
Shoot I somehow missed those on Tire Rack.

Did you keep the OEM sizing or did you change?

I changed to 19 staggered for looks (got Titan wheels) 19 inch wheels don’t have as many options in tire sizing and you can’t rotate them. The way to go is 18 square. (When I get more experienced in the track I will probably get a set of wheels for the track and it will probably be 18 inch square set up with even grippier wheels.

inget my tires at simpletire.com

for us beginners the advice is to stay with good street tires until we can read the grip loss without the screeching sound the produce as they reach the limit, with tires with much higher grip it seems that you can lose the car without much warning.

the other benefit of regular tires is that you can drive the car in the street, on the rain without danger.

That's a good mindset and tires are definitely an element that is trickier to master than some others. The consequences of overestimating grip is also quite important...

Anyway, even if you are not as fast, there is still a lot of fun to be had on those tires. I still take my GR86 regularly to the track with those exact same tires in 245 square and I like them a lot. When rain starts pouring, I'm the fastest on track ?

Story: last summer, 3 accidents in the first hour on the season opener. A M3 CSL, EVO X and S2000, all on slicks. The temperature was cold and they overestimated grip...

OBD does not log brake pressure.

you need to tap the CAN Bus to get it. In there You can get brake pressure and brake rear and front.

You can actually get it from OBD but I do not know the addy. I think you have to have an ethernet type logging device like BM3. I can log it through the OBD port with BM3 logger.

I've been meaning to sniff all that stuff but I have been too lazy.

my re71rs make plenty of squealing noises when pushed to the limit. So did my rt660s. I honestly think it’s better to say it’s easier to lose a car on street tires than good 200tw tires.

probably right for someone going really aggressive on the track.

im more into learning the basics of driving in a track. Will upgrade to softer rubber in the future when I get the hang of it.

How does increasing the front tire size increase understeer?
It doesn’t
It doesn't. It does the opposite. I think he mistyped.
Correct. Fixed it. Thx y’all ?

You definitely would.

I used up a set of my good tires one event, back in the day (lol but true story). I was given a set of street/summer tires by some more experienced buddies, told not be such a whiner or worry about times, to just go out have fun. Glad I did. I was sliding all over the place & laughing my ass off. Lit those suckers up. It was a great lesson & experience.

My dumb take. I could hear them break away at a much slower controllable speed. Try shit I normally wouldn’t have on my 100 tread wear or full slicks. So when just starting out, I think it’s important to stick (pun intended) to really good street tires. Once he gains a bunch of confidence, anticipates what the car will do in various conditions, such as correcting snap oversteer, can pass and be passed anywhere on track - in a solo group, then make the jump to stickier tires.

In my opinion, Kumho V730's would make a fantastic intermediate track tire. They are a price bargain (Like half the price of RE71RS), are very talkative and they are just fine with sliding around. Really good tire to learn what the chassis is doing.

Just don't drive in the rain. ;)

Honestly, they aren't slow tires either. If you know how to drive them, they can be pretty darn fast. I did a two day event this last year, one day on RE71RS and one day on V730:

I have only done 2 track days with my GR86, but would a Supra be a good fit for a novice for HPDE or should I stick with the GR86?

There are some advantages of each, but I'm not sure about keeping both due to cost and parking and was thinking of selling the GR86. From what I keep reading is to start with a moment car first.

I own and track both (GR86 and Supra). The GR86 is a better starter car as it does not bite like the Supra does and is a lot harder to get into trouble. The Gr86 chassis communicates also a lot more, so you learn to pickup car feedback faster.

Personally, I would do a lot more track days on the 86 before moving up to a Supra.

My supra is the first car I did track days with and I am loving it. Started from Novice and I'm in high intermediate now in a year of tonnes of tracking.

With that said, I do suggest keeping the 86. Consumables will be cheaper and that translates to more affordable track days. You will also learn more by not having the horsepower cover for bad turns.
