Right but to actually capitalize on the image they gotta make a sports car that actually helps their bottom line like Chevy with the Vette/Camaro. That's what Nissan is missing, a mainstream sports car that people actually want and buy in volume.

Toyota is going about it somewhat backwards with the FR-S. Testing out the bottom end of the sports car market and only now thinking flagship halo car. Once those buyers dry up you are still missing real brand enthusiasm IMO.

Reviving the supra benefits toyota in other ways besides brand image and bragging rights also. Take the joint development with BMW - that may not have ever happened for another car. You get a big budget when you develop a car like this and the trickle down for all the R&D could benefit the 86 and MAYBE help lead to another sports car model.

Great point. The technology developed and implemented in the Supra may not matter or ever get used in the Camry but it sure as hell can help make the next generation FRS or the rumor sub-FRS sports car even better than if no MKV Supra was ever developed. So yes Toyota overall really benefits from the Supra.

Who knows the trickle down effect might reach all models at some point, even appliances on wheels like the Camry. It might not get a full carbon fiber body but other weight saving technologies and processes maybe eventually make their way into the entire Toyota lineup to increase efficiency and reduce overall company MPG.

Look at the crazy buzz over the NSX and Ford GT intros. Great publicity and image for those companies.

I heard they got Jerry Seinfeld to show up at Detroit for the NSX announcement. Really gimicky. All they need is bring another concept, that's all the buzz Toyota needs for this car.

The NSX will help Acura's image regardless of whether they make any money from it. I remember back in the day when they had the NSX and Integra, everyone viewed the brand differently than they do now. It was this exciting quasi-luxury yet sporty brand. I bet that helped them sell plenty of other models. Not that Toyota really needs help selling its models but the Supra will give the brand some needed excitement around it at least.

Yea look at all the buzz around the Ford GT also. How many people just took notice of Ford performance vehicles as a result? It should trickle down to the whole Mustang line just knowing they have been developing DCT, carbon fiber wheels/brakes, flat plane engines, etc.

Doesn't even have to be exotic level model to have the same effect for Toyota. Even a solid sports car that sells in significant volume can have a positive image effect for the entire brand. C7 Corvette is such an example. It's not exactly exotic level in price, image, or volume but it's given GM and Chevy great press. Hell even the FR-S would have given Toyota a nice boost if it wasn't badged a Scion (no offense to FR-S owners it's a great car and I own one).

Poor NSX, it seems that the Ford GT stole the spot light at this years Detroit Auto Show.

im thinking the FT1 will bring more people into Toyota's showroom. even tho they may end up leaving with in a Camry, Highlander, and etc.
