“The Supra will be by Gazoo,” said the boss of the performance division, Shigeki Tomoyama. Auto Express understands that the Gazoo Racing team became more heavily involved in the car’s development after Toyota president Akio Toyota tested the vehicle and decided it needed to be “more mobile” – with more of an edge than what was a fairly benign initial set-up.
The new car has to appeal to the existing owners first,” he said. “The old cars had a straight-six engine, twin-turbochargers and rear-wheel drive; the new car has to have the same philosophy.”

That report sounds interesting but at the same time just feels off somehow at the same time. If it indeed is Gazoo does that mean Toyota is bringing a new name brand to the U.S. because the initial report was that the Gazoo name brand stays in Japan while TRD will be playing their position in the state. Does that mean all that has changed? Time and patience is all we got.

Probably feels off because it's ridiculous lol. The Gazoo brand is a tuning arm that awkwardly competes with Technocraft Japan/TRD, but is favored by Akio Toyoda.

I'm sure there will be a GRMN version of the car, that's for sure, especially given how TRD in most markets outside of Japan has a primary focus on Off-road stuff these days. that said, the base car isn't going to be a factory race tuned platform.

Plus, the head marketing guys from Toyota USA said they dislike the Gazoo name and that people wouldnt identify with it, so that's pretty much out for the U.S.

"The Supra will be by Gazoo," stated Shigeki Tomoyama, the man in charge of the sub-brand, while Akio Toyoda himself insisted that the new Supra needed to be more aggressive than what was originally planned, a conclusion he arrived at after driving a pre-production model."

This indicates that a possible reason for the delay was the re-definition of the performance benchmarks. The statements clearly show that the Supra was initially intended to aim at a more low-level performance, something that changed later on during development. This was based on the fact that the CEO wants to attract the classic Supra audience having in mind the 3.0; Twin Turbo RWD JZA80.
Something similar happened with the Honda NSX as well during development. Initially intended to be an FR V10 NA platform, then changed to its current layout with a 3.5V6 NA , then performance wasnt satisfying and went on turbocharging.
This can only be good. I would be dissapointed if i saw a Toyota badged Z4. This seems to have changed....

The next generation Toyota Supra will be badged and sold as a Gazoo Racing model when it goes on sale at the end of 2019. That’s according to Shigeki Tomoyama, president of Gazoo Racing. Speaking with Motor1.com at a Tokyo motor show preview event, Tomoya said "the Supra will be by Gazoo."

Goes on sale the end of 2019 as a 2020.
That is a full two years from now!!:nono:

Yeah... this thing has been looking like a 2020 MY for some time. It doesn't sound like that bit was part of the official quote though, so there's still a shred of hope for a 2019MY coming out sometime next year.

It sounds like the Supra GRMN / Gazoo or whatever you want to call it, is the top of the line model that will be release at a later date. I still expect the base model with the 385hp B58 to be release sometime late next year.
