It’s Gazoo Racing Supra, not Toyota Supra – report

It’s one of the most revered names in the car world, so wouldn’t Toyota want to revive it? We are talking about the upcoming Toyota Supra, which according to Auto Express, will not be called that.

Instead, the Supra will be the ultimate launchpad for the Gazoo Racing sub-brandand will wear Gazoo badges instead of Toyota emblems. A Gazoo Supra doesn’t sound that nice, does it?

“The Supra will be by Gazoo,” Shigeki Tomoyama, head of Gazoo was quoted as saying. Apparently, this is after the Gazoo Racing team became more involved in the Supra’s development, the consequence of Toyota president Akio Toyoda testing the prototype and saying that it needed to be “more mobile”. AE‘s report says that mules have since been given more lively handling.

The Supra is being co-developed with BMW’s next Z4, but while the German roadster will debut next year, Toyota’s coupe “may not arrive until the second half of 2019,” according to the report, hinted by Tomoyama. The UK publication adds that it’s likely that the Gazoo-badged Supra will use bigger, six-cylinder engines.

“The new car has to appeal to the existing owners first. The old cars had a straight-six engine, twin turbos and rear-wheel drive; the new car must have the same philosophy,” the Gazoo Racing boss told Auto Express. Tomoyama owns a 600 bhp carbon fibre-bodied JZA80 Supra, so the next one is in good hands.

The report further adds that the new sports car will weigh between 1,200 to 1,500 kg, with the BMW M4 Coupe and Porsche 911 acting as benchmarks. Gazoo Racing Supra? Let it not be true. In the meantime, check out this latest batch of spyshots, which show clearly the front LED headlamps and rear LED signatures. The mule also wears new cross-spoke wheels.

There is no way a 6 cylinder twin turbo version is going to weigh 1200 kg - we will be very lucky if it weighs anything less than 1425 kg (3141 lbs) without using materials that will push its cost deep into Corvette territory. I'm hoping for the lower - powered (say 280 hp) variant to come in at around 3000 lbs and $40k US but that is probably too optimistic.

Was damn near done before the Gazoo/Akio debacle.

It depends what the definition of major is. If they're going to add 250lbs and 10-15k to the price, then I feel that is a pretty severe impact.

What I'm hoping is going to happen is Akio backs off, Gazoo and Tada tune this thing the best they can as-is and then it ends up being great for everyone.

Akio needs to chill out and go do something else though, and the divisions and marketing teams that try to impress him 24/7 need to do the same.

Thankfully, it sounds like thats what's going to happen though. (mostly due to heavy pull within Technocraft, Tom's, and Denso; all of which like Tada for what he did with the 86)

I believe that the only thing that could increase the price so much is some significant increase in horsepower of the engine , is that the case?
Also i love the 86 but it is true its engine is underperforming , i hope this is not the case with spx/supra.

OP is new, so we'll cut him some slack. In the future there is no need to made a new thread for every single click bait article out there. Especially when it has already been covered.

You can snap your fingers and add 10-15k during car development; so it's not difficult to do. Everything costs money, especially manpower.
