^^ With the claim that it will be the "entry model for the GR performance brand" I have questions about where the 3rd gen GR86 will fall into place in the lineup... and what the least expensive manual transmission Celica with AWD will cost. Hopefully a manual option won't be limited to the top level trim if this is truly an "entry model" for the brand.

Standards evolve over time. it's completly normal that a 2029 car will have more power than a 2019 car (MK5 Supra)...

the next Supra, that will be from the same generation of cars will likely be 450hp+ and still be on top of the foodchain.

Were you mad that the GR Corolla had more power than the MK4 Supra? The MK5 Supra and that upcoming MR2/Celica will be 10 years apart...

I wasn't mad because I never owned a Mk4 Supra. But I have owned 3 different MR2's in the past. They were all under powered.

I know Toyota has a patent for some kind of wonky complicated manual transmission to use with a Hybrid system but who knows if that will make it into a Celica or MR2. Not even supercars with hybrid systems have manuals on offer. The usual consensus is manuals die with hybrids.

On this specific point he is speculating wildly off from a lot of articles in the last couple of years that detail Toyota's commitment to continuing to offer manual transmissions amidst electrification. The Celica, MR2 and Supra are all GR division cars and the G20E engine was designed from the ground up with hybrid electrification in mind.

It's funny... in his last video to date on the 3rd gen GR86 he talks about the car's likelihood of being offered as a hybrid (which tracks with Toyota's plans going forward for everything) but in it he has a totally different and much more optimistic and positive opinion on this: he speculated that since we expect the GR86 to be a basic RWD entry performance model that the hybrid setup will be the "mild" type with an electric motor sandwiched in some way between the engine and transmission. Or that maybe it'll be a part of the manual transmission somehow.

I do see that as being very possible also when combined with some of the more advanced patents that cover how to electronically disengage the clutch in some kind of situation (emergencies for instance).

Anyway, whatever GR does with any of their upcoming vehicles I think they absolutely can doa mild hybrid with a manual transmission. Or... worst case scenario (but I don't think it's the only option at this time) they can do what Ferrari just did with their physically there but electronically simulated manual operation on an automatic transmission.

Then there's also the thing that he isn't focusing on: at current time the company push to offer *every* model with a hybrid configuration doesn't necessarily mean that there won't be one or more mild or full hybrid Celicas but also one or more trim levels (like a GT-Four spec) that are AWD turbo A/T or M/T NON-hybrid. That would allow Toyota to have multiple drivetrain variants available and probably also market the Celica to many different types of buyers.

With the push Toyota has remained on so far to keep manual GR's available I don't think they'll be killing the option off any time soon.
