I feel like im at odds with a lot of people here but I stretched myself to get the Supra. With the interest rates like they are my options only seem like down size to a cheaper car, or buy out the remaining on my PCP and keep the Supra for another 4 years. Would hate to be forced into an electric car but im sort of getting the feeling maybe ICE is a hot potato of depreciation waiting to happen once manufacturers move over completely too. Would love to hear your thoughts on that guys.

I think I am finally settled with the Supra. It’s the only car I regret selling, but hopefully coming back soon. Had a 991.1 GT3 before the Supra and I used to enjoy tracking it/dailying. Never missed the GT3 as I do with the Supra. Part of the enjoyment was the tuner scene and the aftermarket support for this platform. While not cheap but still better than the Porsche’s aftermarket part tax.

Also, I felt more comfortable working on the supra and tracking it hard.

I still get an etch to own higher end cars (GT2RS, 488, 720S, etc.), but I -and my wallet- was lucky enough to find out it only takes one test drive or track day with these cars to scratch it. The Supra for me is the car to own and keep.

Yeah, batteries keep improving at lightning speeds. I don’t want to be stuck in one of those until they get all the bugs worked out. Don’t take it to empty, don’t charge it all the way to full, Florida is too hot, below zero is too cold, the list goes on… There was a whole article recently on how to find a charger that actually works when you’re on a road trip ? No thanks.… But do appreciate all the other consumers out there doing all the expensive testing for me ;)

Fun little 2nd, 3rd, 4th car toys to keep close to home is the only way I could see owning one.

(edit: I misunderstood, you meant ICE cars deprecating and I meant EV cars depreciating way faster than any ICE car due to the EV technology rapidly changing - I’m not worried about what already works well)

I'm thinking about a g80 M3 xdrive. I love my supra but would like more room and have AWD. I'm in between that and deciding to just mod the supra, only issue is with that is I'll just keep it then since I will be going to DAW turbo so selling it will lose to much value.

I would trade for a gt500. But I hope to keep the Supra until I can afford to molest a gen 3 viper

I was also looking at a Lotus Emira ... but worried about owners issues ( from their forum) and the fact sales and company balance sheet looks like possibly LOTUS may not be around long term..

I keep telling myself that the only car that could get me out of the supra would be a C7 GS 7MT, but realistically, I just want to be back in a Scion FRS. ?‍♂

I'm by no means an expert but in my unknowledgeable forum opinion, I think you're right that generally re: ICE depreciating i.e. all your daily runners like corsa/fiesta/focus/yaris types of cars, the ICE versions will die off soon and be replaced by EV versions, and it will be more than just a 'market / cultural adjustment" but rather something enforced by the government whether people like it or not.

However... you have purchased a unique car, the Supra, both in looks as well as performance, more so in the UK vs US where it's more "popular" (*using that word relatively speaking vs UK), so chances are it will retain at least decent value I think mate ?

Yeah, I understand this sentiment. I was recently cross shopping between a used Cayman or the TTRS - some of my friends say I made the wrong choice going with the TTRS, but my reasons came down to the 2 exact points you made above. I can work on it myself and the aftermarket scene is pretty robust.

How do you even work on a Porsche? Genuinely asking since I’ve never owned one. I assume you need a garage with a lift?

It is better to have a lift, but still a simple exhaust change can sometimes be tricky given the muffler size and location.

I think ICE performance vehicle values will absolutely skyrocket as EVs become a thing. EVs everywhere, then you get to drive something like a Supra? People have proven they will pay ridiculous amounts for novelty.

Every car guy should have a lift. Makes things 1,000,000 times easier.

I'm probably wrong but i think the UK/EU are in a different position to the US in regards to EV vs ICE. The UK is going to get harsher and harsher on ICE drivers until you would have to have more money than sense to drive one, UNLESS once the majority have switched the government focus their attention elsewhere (hopefully we will just be the petrol car wierdos doing our own thing). I really hope i can hold on to the supra and it becomes a commodity people want later but i still think it could go either way.

It's for sure hard to predict what will happen. Once the majority of car owners move over to EV, then the commercial market for petrol will decrease and the enthusiasts will have to hope the e-fuel market that some car makers (like Porsche) are developing will take over, albeit this will likely be expensive and taxed highly.

One way to think of it could well be like horses. Before the motor car, they were the main source of transport and were widely used by all sorts of people and industries. Once the motor car took over, they became the reserve of enthusiasts, expensive to keep/maintain, but still have a devoted following.

I could see something similar happen to ICE cars. There are way too many classic car owners, clubs, events, etc to fully get rid of them. They will just become more expensive to run, likely used at special events or for a drive on a nice day.

Luckily I'm already in that position, so it's less likly going to be my Supra replaced by an EV, but my daily driver Yaris.
