Count me among what seems to be the few who actually like both the clutch and the gearbox. Every manual takes some getting used to, and not all shifts will be perfect.
So you have no issues at all on the 1-2 shift.. even in anger?

More smooth up shifts than not, but not all are perfect. I don’t drive my car hard, so I’m likely an outlier.

I'm not the world's greatest driver but every upshift in my Type R is perfect. And if it's not, it's because I'm being lazy or I otherwise fuck up the shift. And that's kind of my point. The mechanism (especially in 2023) shouldn't be more smooth than not, it should do its job perfectly. Every time.

The manual in the FN2 Type R is a good deal newer than the S2000 and it really is sublime - Pretty sure you guys never got anything like it in the US.
Doesn't mean much. Have you ever driven an S2000? People consistently rate it as having one of the best feeling shift actions of any production car.

My understanding is that the gearbox is pretty much regarded as the gold standard under Porsche money.
People have also said that about S2000s for 2 decades now...

  • CDV delete is absolutely worth it particularly for 1-2 shifts, but be aware that the purpose of the CDV is to shift the warranty burden for poor manual driving from the driveline components that are warrantied (trans, drive shaft, diff, half shafts) to the one that isn't (clutch.) I feel like the only detractors of the CDV delete around here are the ones who admit they've never done it. It's an obvious improvement and it makes the clutch more intuitive.
  • Regarding rev hang, I haven't really noticed it in the Supra but I learned how to drive around it quite a while ago and I don't notice it on most new cars, so no idea if it's significant or not. Rev hang is an emissions thing, and if you've only ever driven older manual cars you may have never run into it. One thing I have observed about rev hang, if you're holding the clutch pedal all the way to the floor, it will keep hanging because the car's ECU/PCM/whatever TLA uses the clutch start safety switch to recognize that you have the clutch pushed all the way in. At least on the few cars I've tested this on, letting the clutch pedal off the floor enough to disengage the clutch start safety switch cancels the rev hang. So instead of holding the clutch pedal to the floor, tap it on the floor and immediately start lifting up on it. You may have to speed up your shifts as a result, since the rev hang has convinced you that you need to shift slower. The other thing that I do (and this can lead to smoother shifts generally) is not just dump the clutch on upshifts when driving non-aggressively. Tap the floor with the pedal and then pause at the bite point of the clutch for a beat, then let it all the way out. This gives the clutch an opportunity to match the speed of the engine to the gearbox speed in the new gear to make up for any deficiency on your part with timing. Ideally you should be letting the revs fall and catching them with the clutch at the exact right time for a smooth upshift, but not everyone can get it right every time and it takes practice.
