Well guess what guys… my engine oil level dropped down to the middle. Used to read full.

Now I’m concerned I might have the issue. Anyone else’s drop to the halfway point and stay?

I’m at 2200 miles.

This is promising. Thank you. Unfortunately I am a pessimist so when I saw the drop I immediately thought I was doomed ☹ Trying hard to change that way of thinking...

I will not worry about it and just enjoy the car as it is. Because it is awesome.

Don't hold your breath if another time you check (or the 1000x afterwards you check), the level goes up/down. As opinions vary, it's not a problem till you get the warning to add oil. I've got no concerns running most any gasoline engine car with an oil level that's somewhere between Low and Full. There's perfectly adequate oil in that range to keep a car protected.

On some cars, when you get that low oil light, damage has been done on the motor already. Kinda like the x-box red ring of death…. :)

I am curious about the a90 itself as if there is another oil wanting light for it being below the bottom level or is the first one is saying your right at the low minimum oil level. Etc.

I was taught to never get the oil so low that the low oil light comes on. But hey, that’s just me……

This is my first fancy car. All vehicles I drove had a low oil pressure light. If that came on more than likely damage was already done.

This is not helping my pessimism lol I had the RROD on my first Xbox 360.

I don’t think the low oil level light would cause damage but low oil pressure certainly would.

Good point about a secondary oil level light though. I won’t be the one to find that out, that’s for sure. IF it ever drops to MIN, it will get more oil added that second.

FWIW I’ve never cleaned my tail pipes in the last 2200 miles and they look like this. Just recently started seeing more black soot buildup. I assume this is normal? What do yours look like?

Inconclusive about when damage occurred. No one's proven one way or another.

Yes if you check your oil regularly you can get a warning of low oil prior to the system popping up with a warning (the notification text is slightly different). But no, it's not automatic.

This is also different from low oil pressure - which would be an actual light in the dash and that's really when damage has most likely occurred.

Let's be absolutely clear.
Low oil level notification is not akin to oil pressure warning light. The later is really no good.

That seems pretty normal.

I am just curious on how you know this for sure? Are you a BMW engineer? Just curious….I know there is an low oil pressure light in the dash as well. But how do you know this low oil level indicator doesn’t hurt the motor already?

Fair question. No one has proven anything of the sort with this motor. If someone has, share the information and I'll happily learn from it.

Nothing in my statement stated whether or not damage to an engine occurs regardless of low oil level warning or low oil pressure warning. If there's anything unclear specifically in my statements, please point it out and I can make the correction to ensure it doesn't cause confusion for other readers.

edit: in my experience (not in the Supra), once as the driver of my own car, the oil pressure light appeared and almost immediately afterwards the lost compression and check-engine flashing occurred. Similar incidents have happened to friends in their cars. There's a CRV owner I know who had low oil level and the oil light would turn on when they would turn the car a bit more aggressively but the car continues to run strong (but we all know Honda motors run on anything).
