Which dealer? Let us know if they screwed anything up.

-RJM
Toyota of Lake City! After some early miscommunication with the service advisor, it all ended up working out fine.

The Supra tech was late to work the morning I dropped it off, and I had to explain to the SA that the remedy for the recall was just a software update (not anything hardware related). He had originally told me it was going to take all day…

For those wondering, I dropped mine off at 7:30am and was called at 11:00am that it was ready. They let me know I was the first person to be in for the recall, so @Loco38SUP maybe it will take less time if you go there. No additional miles were put on my car for “testing” and it was an overall positive experience.

I also got full-screen carplay now, so RIP to those that paid good money for that :(

Hope that batteries don’t die from the recall upload. Watch all the battery warning lights come on after the update lol
Unless the Supra tech at your dealer is really bad, it seems like standard procedure to hook it up to a charger. They did that for my buddies and I at all our local dealers when changing the oil. Since they have to hook things up to it.

Your assuming these guys know anything about the Supra. My dealership thinks the Supra uses the same oil as all the other Toyotas.

Well then I'm properly screwed because the one at my closest dealership takes >3 hours to change the oil. Guess I'd better clear a week for this update and expect a battery replacement as part of the process.

It took ~2 hours to change my oil and I was watching the tech do it from a window into the service bay in the waiting area. It just seemed like he had to walk to different ends of the service area to grab different tools, computer, oil, filter, etc. He wasn't hanging out or chatting around with others. Spent a lot of time on the laptop and just overall inspecting different parts of the car beyond just an oil change. AFAIK, he didn't notice or see that I was watching.

I agree that the dealership as a whole - they don't know jack about a Supra (or half of the cars they must sell/service) - but the only important thing is the Supra tech knows what he/she is doing. That's the person you need to be concerned about - asking anyone else is utterly useless unless they deal with more Supras - which luckily my service center has seen more than a few.

@gcmak - The fact that your dealership has any possibility for the customer to view the service area at all is already a sign that it's significantly more honest an operation than mine. Unless I drive all the way across town, I have to spend half an hour just rejecting all the unnecessary "required services" (tire rotation... really?!?!). I swear if they actually did all the filter changes and fluid flushes that they recommend, it would take all day every time I got an oil change (and cost $600). Of course, they don't do shit and everyone other than the poor senior citizens knows it.

If it weren't for the recall I'd just go to my local 3rd party BMW specialist shop... but no joy on this trip. Luckily I can go to them for everything else other than warranty work.

you will lose your tune, I verified that with my dealership.
Meaning I would then just reflash with my tune? Or I’d be fucked? I had unlocked ECU. Didn’t even need bench unlock.

So many unknowns with this recall flash fix. Really waiting for some sicko with a 2020 tuned with Ecutek to take theirs in. I'd like the full screen CarPlay but I can do without it if its going to lock me out and I'm not paying for it either through bimmercode.

Got my car back this morning as they promised.
I'd say my car was returned to stock aside from my driver profile, supra connect, and navigation were all still 'activated' and knew who I was.

I do have full-screen CarPlay and I think a new brightness/contrast adjustment on the reverse camera (which I think was a known addition to this version of iDrive).

Spent ~1 hour re-doing all the bimmercode items I had done but still need to reprogram my favorites buttons, re-tune the equalizer and even set clock settings (back to auto).

Nothing strange or odd about my car after the update; note Bimmercode is the only OBDII related change I've applied to my car prior to this recall update - I am not tuned nor have used JB4.

Good luck folks!

100% chance any previously tuned or unlocked car will need a bench unlock to be tuned again after getting the recall. This happens any time Toyota connects to the OBDII port for an update. The recall includes an update for full screen apply car play.

Depending on your state, holding out may be only for a limited timeframe due to the fact that they can hold registration renewal for any outstanding recalls.

You will need a new ecutek license (which I've heard will be free if due to a recall such as this). It will be dependent on your particular tuner on how they deal with the unlock and license. Waiting for my tuner (Marin) to get his recall done so he can figure out the next steps will be for his clients.

Thanks for the info on the lock aspect. When Marin gets back to you do let me/us know how things shape up.
