"FYI, some folks at Toyota blew this engine up at 700+ HP looking to do something with it.
So they are playing with something

I'm listening... are they looking to make a Hellcat/GT500/ZR1/GTR killer?! I'd think 500-600hp in this chassis should be enough but I don't mind 700hp :headbang:

More like, this chassis is able to withstand 700 hp from the engine, we are just going to leave it at 350 and let you do as you wish. This is YOUR supra. Have fun

While I do appreciate that we have the capacity to make that much power, a highway warrior with a ton of HP would up the sales quite a bit where I'm from. Maybe this is the mid-cycle GRMN edition that would be a drag strip beast instead of some aero/suspension and +50hp for circuit track.

"Here is a +500HP using the same engine in our base model for $$$ more. Or you could just get the base model and do it yourself." It would sell itself at that point.

That would make it unattainable money wise and possibly emissions impossible...lol...to get through.

There is a track monster car inside the base and it has been tested extensively so it doesn't fall apart. Again, I think 700 hp with stock internals to withstand that amount of power without breaking was the goal.

The GRMN version will probably have carbon fiber everything to make it 2900, spoiler, red black and white scheme and a modest boost to 450 hp at 75k. The bonus is new tech, manual and the fact you can extract a whole lot more out of the thing cause same engine might make Porsche blush.

Hypothetically.

450/2900 would be insane, that's equivalent of a GTR/Hellcat power to weight ratio in a car that can actually turn.

The mentality that X beats Y in a straight line will always be a factor. If the past 5 years or so of TRC and 1320 street race videos prove anything is that the highway was and always will be the MKIV's natural habitat. I look forward to see how the MKV will fill those big shoes.

There is a comment somewhere that A70 left regarding the design process foe the A90 - something along the lines of no interest in making this car a straight line focus, like the A80 was in the USA... Even some contempt for the drag racing only mentality?

Similarly, the A80 is more than comfortable on a track, but in the us they're mostly straight line monsters.

As mentioned, if you want a highway car, it will most likely the case of building it yourself.

It seems like there are a lot of excuses being made about this new Supra. Won’t be this, won’t do that, it’s a whole new concept, blah, blah, blah. Either it’s going to be better than the MKIV or it won’t, so far it sounds like it won’t be. I would have more respect for Toyota and have more interest in this car if they just came out with the info already. If it’s not equal or better than the mkiv just come out and say it.

I think this is where the issue is, Toyota not willing to say it’s different and to change expectations. They want to market it as a Supra but it’s something completely different.

I wonder why a company who's image revolves around reliability would do 4 years of extensive testing with parts from a company that has reliability issues?

I just can't understand it...

:hmm:

I'm not a huge Supra / Toyota history buff like some others here, but it seems the A80 original release and intent was nothing close to what it has become.

I'm not sure people can compare the upcoming factory version of the A90 to the current state of the A80. The A80's current persona isn't because of Toyota....its because of the aftermarket. Did Toyota have a huge role in how the aftermarket evolved? Ofcourse! Having the stout 2JZ and the bulletproof V160 made it a dream for the tuning community. With that as the case, shouldn't people compare the A80 to the future aftermarket tuned A90? I'm not saying the A90 is going to be on par or surpass the A80's post aftermarket level once the aftermarket is done with it....but I think people should stop saying the A90 is a dud when they compare it to a tuned and built A80. Compare the A90 to the original from factory A80 version. The numbers or weight may not be a huge step forward.....but considering the amount of safety tech, and performance tech put in the car I thinks its pretty impressive they can get similar or better numbers weight wise.

As far as testing the engine up to 700hp....I think thats for two reasons. One being for the race car homoligation stuff....two being if you make an engine that can withstand 700hp and not break....well that engines going to last forever at 350-385hp (aka toyota reliability)

Excellent voice of reason! for me i actually don't mind the numbers as much as long as it is not heavy. My two main beefs are no manual and BMW engineering. Nothing against BMW.

I would rather this have been a 100% Toyota product not a BMW built to Toyota specs.

If you rather 100 percent Toyota, then be ready to cough up 80 to 100k for the same type of car where it would be DOA.

But hey, it would no doubt be a full toyota product!!!

You want pure Toyota, It's called the LFA. Listening to everything Tada is saying, it's very clear this is more of a Z car, but better. I am excited.

German cars come very detuned, they do not come from the factory on the edge. There are numerous examples of this from BMW, VW, Audi, etc.

No matter what the power output of this car is, I predict you will see 50-75 whp with a flash and probably 100 whp with FBO and a tune.

The N54 is considered by many to be the spiritual successor to the 2JZ. The only I see this car as a failure in terms of engine, is if they slap the old gen BMW engine, or some weird combination like the current M2 non comp has.

Or LFC.

Tada is saying the car will be to his vision as a lightweight car with power and the chance to provide several entry points for turns suggest it really was built for racing from the ground up. More so than the 86

Yes! No reason to freak out over power as well. This will be an easy 400-450 whp car with a downpipe and tune. For the drag racers, that is good for 10 second passes between 120-125 on slicks.
