What are you guys using for laptiming? I was using Harry’s Laptimer and tried Track Addict app for iOS. Having issues with them so…. I started looking around and settled with the Garmin Catalyst. One of the main reasons, simplicity. This video pretty much summed it up that they had me in mind: ?

Circling back… was looking at the German dude’s wing (build page), which reminds me of
Please continue, Mark. I'm listening carefully? btw.Great rocket sled at the profile pic, did you shrunk the supra??

Laptiming: I have access to a garmin catalyst.. - It's a great tool, but the price/performance isn't really good, if you "only" want a tool for laptiming. You have to use the analysis to make it pay off. And in case you're using it, you can invest the price better in an instructor. Every newcomer will improve faster with an experienced driver at the co-driver seat. Just my opinion.
But it is as you say: Simple to use. An "all in one tool".

Negative point of the catalyst: Sometimes the camera failed. And it's not only our catalyst. That happened quite often to many customers.

100% agree on professional instruction! I had an AIM computer in my S2K and ran with a race team. It makes a world of difference having a baseline lap from your local pro, imo. Been doing this for a while and back at it just for fun. Obviously on my own, no team, and keeping it mega simple. I’m really trying not to go too far down the rabbit hole this go round ;) Lots of other fun things to do… Wife and I like to waterski & scuba off season.

And glad you like the profile pic ?

I use Harrys. At my home track I don't even turn it on anymore. When doing TT I have a transponder. I know those 4/5 tracks well enough to feel where i have blown a turn or left .2 secs on the track.

I will get a catalyst at some point.... probably used ;)

I know it could help shave a little time... just stubborn.

At VIR i don't need a $1000 Garmin to tell me to have bigger balls in turn 10 and i "know" how i should be going through hog pen... My best learning comes with making friends with advanced guys at a track that is their "home track" and following them for a session and talking about certain corners before and after a session.

I dropped 2 full seconds and a new to me track (Jefferson) last season at TT by listening to and following a guy who "rules" that track

Great feedback! Have you done any tracking with them? (if that’s what you were referring to, my bad)
I have done a few track days with them. They just ask to be thrown around and the amount of mechanical grip they give you allows for easy recoveries. No issues with clunking or rattling hardware and overall I am super happy.

If you want the ultimate in simplicity, IMO get an AIM Solo2 (non-DL). Stand alone and just works. If you want video and overlays then it gets much more complicated. I had been using a racecapture mk2 but I grew sick of the limits/problems so I sold it this past winter. I'm going to start the season with a xgps 160, obdlink mx+, gopro, and RaceChrono Pro and see if its worth going beyond that. I am holding out hope Garmin comes out with a newer or better designed catalyst at some point and I would buy that.

One perk of the Garmin is the recently added some app functionality. They added leaderboards and a “friends” aspect so you can compare data (or talk trash) with others to help improve your line/braking/acceleration (or talk trash). I know it’s not the whole point of the device, but it does add a layer of fun if you have a core group of people you always compare times with.

Solo2DL. Was using it standalone last season, wiring it into the canbus to take advantage of the additional data it can provide.

I used both the Garmin Catalyst and a RaceCapture Track Mk3 this last season.

I have a write up for the RaceCapture here: https://www.supramkv.com/threads/datalogging-lap-times-and-vehicle-telemetry-all-in-one.15385/

Garmin is insanely overpriced although it just works and the ability to see results and where you can improve as soon as you get in the pits without a laptop, etc is pretty great. The lack of engine data was a big lose for me, hence going to the RaceCapture device. It also has it's quirks but it's working well for me so far, especially since I can log engine and chassis/brake data in the same log files.

If I didn't want the ability to look at data as soon as I take my helmet off, I would have gone with a Solo2DL. Simple and proven.

RE: lap timers -- I've only used Track Addict and was really pleased with it; incredibly powerful for a free app and was very accurate comparing it to the PDR on my Corvette. However, I got a new phone just before my last trip to VIR and had major GPS signal issues all weekend. I thought maybe it was just a location thing there, but it persisted at my home track. I later discovered removing the case from my phone helped a little but still had more failures than recorded laps -- super frustrating..

So, plan is to get an external/bluetooth GPS receiver. I'm eyeing the Garmin GLO 2 which will do 10hz and is only $100. Anyone have experience with it or other external receivers?

Take a close look at the app you wish to use. Some don't support very many devices though most of that is based on your OS. I think the leading two are the Dual XGPS 160 and the other is the Qstarz 818GT. Both are more than your $100 price point but do iOS and Android and most apps support. I have the 160 myself and pretty happy with it.

EDIT: If I was really starting over and didnt care about Solostorm, I'd probably just get a Racebox Mini and use RaceChrono Pro with it.

I used the Dual XGPS 160 with Harrys like a decade ago and it made a substantial difference with resolution.

Left is iphone built in GPS and right is the 160. Very noticeable difference in resolution. This was in 2015, so whatever model iphone was out at the time.

I use an Apex Pro Lap Timer.
https://apextrackcoach.com/

Similar concept to the Catalyst with real time feedback but not implemented as slickly and requires a phone to record data or video.

I also export the data for analysis with Track Attack.
https://trackattack.io/

It can also do video overlay all on the iphone without any editing skills required.

eg.

I have the Dual XGPS 160 and it pairs perfectly with an iPhone. 10Hz vs 1Hz is quite substantial and worth every penny. The Garmin GPS also use 10Hz acquisition. Get one @AHP ! You won’t be sorry :)

I’ve had the AIM Solo2 and sold it with my S2K ? (my car was built and setup by Joh Dean at Sick Sideways and the buyer wanted everything intact $). Anyways, I loved it. The race team managed it all before. They analyzed all the info (plug into my car on their computer) and told me what to do. This go around I’m on my own. Told myself I’m going to just keep it fun.

Two really cool Supra buddies down in Homestead are using the Catalyst and got me hooked! It‘s simple and all I’m looking for. Just fun factor, get an idea of the track conditions with consistent driving. Yes it’s expensive but as the 1st video shows, simple for me. I’ll pay for simplicity any day. But gotta admit, y’all are getting me more interested in the mechanical and tech stuff. But know not to attempt too much myself ?
