I always thought hydrogen should be the future. Problem is you don't have a hydrogen "Tesla" to pave the way at the moment. Toyota could maybe do it, but I feel it needs a crazy billionaire type to throw everything at the idea

The Mirai is only mildly successful, not in small part on account of the fact Toyota doesn't really go out of its way to promote it, or make it a global phenomenon. It's there, it works, but nobody really cares about it.

That's probably what will happen with the latest gimmick in the realm of truly clean electric power, the hydrogen fuel cell Hilux pickup truck. It's a contraption that was revealed this week over in the UK with no apparent reason other than to prove that it can be d one.
Lol

The trouble with it is primarily the hydrogen generation infrastructure and refueling station infrastructure being very sparse currently. The automakers and pretty much every other player sees it as a chicken or egg problem... so with only so much buildout of the refueling stations only so many people can make use of the current HCV cars anyway and so only so many are built.

I've driven a first gen Mirai and it was very much like driving a full electric Prius apart from knowing the fuel cell system was in there and apart from the (admittedly cool) whirring of the cooling fans under full throttle to unleash all of its 150hp or so.

The 2nd gen Mirai (RWD, LS400 chassis based) was a model I frequently saw on Los Angeles roads when I was visiting a couple of months ago.

I think semi tractor trailers and heavy industrial vehicles and heavy marine vessels will make use of hydrogen to offset the massive penalties that come with huge battery pack weight but regular passenger vehicles that are HCV will likely piggyback onto any refueling routes designed for those... much in the same way diesel commercial vehicle refueling centers exist now (Loves, Flying J, Buc-EE's, etc.)

Apparently the death of ICE cars date has been moved up:

We have enough oil to last us a few centuries….it’s true. As a matter of fact, we (US) have so much, that before 2020 we were not only meeting demand domestically but we were selling to other countries with no sign of shortage in sight. Can’t say that about batteries! This whole EV movement is to make some people very very rich, and has NOTHING to do with logic of climate change or travel efficiency. Believe me, if we get a new administration in 2024, the ICE will see a huge growth in production and sales.

You’re saying it’ll get worse before it gets better, the ship ? has sailed and there’s no turning back ? Maybe Australia will share the math with the rest of the nations?

The wheels on that 998 concept/prototype are much too large and I would like to see a milder rear wing or spoiler available but it otherwise looks promising.

Let's see how it turns out in production form though.

Porsche has the right attitude prioritizing lightness and size even at the expense of battery pack size and weight. The battery technology will get better but a car designed to be overweight and too big from the start doesn't do it favors in the long run.
