Toyota "Preparing" Hotter Supra GRMN, Says Chief Engineer

If the GRMN Supra is to be a true God Killer (the kind of car that would make @PerformanceSound toss his Viagra prescription)... close-ratio manual/DCT, upgraded brakes, diff, suspension... lightweight composite components... lightweight racing interior... improved aero package... and toss in a one-off limited production hand built bespoke engine...

I don't see anything much south of $120K. Even at that, it'll probably be sold as a loss-leader. I suspect it will appear within one MY (either side) of the A90's midlife refresh.

Nah, just got back to home base so I'm gonna hit Tokyo Auto Salon, then I have a few things planned in EU, and then I make my way back to JP. Probably won't be back across the pond for a while...

What should we pay attention to at the Tokyo auto salon? I'm thinking of coming down there.

Hmm... but if they wait more than 1-2 years after the first model year to release the low volume GRMN/TRD/Alpha cars then I can see that being a problem. It's one thing to not release it first thing but given that the A90 will probably have a 10 year production run in current form, why would Toyota want to introduce the halo ultimate version only after several years?

To me, "continual improvements" to the MKV model line means doing that for *every* trim level with at least one major refresh after 4-5 years and then at least another 4-5 years of production after that with some tweaks here and there. And then a long time from now they can always do a "final edition" the way Mazda did for the RX-7 Spirit R, Mitsubishi for the Lancer Evo FQ400 & Final Edition and Buick with the '87 Grand National GNX. Unless I'm mistaken the A80 Twin Turbo 6-speed never got any specially optioned "final edition" for the JDM 2002 model year.

But the Supra GRMN Alpha shouldn't be that at all. That trim level, though somewhat limited, *needs* to remain available throughout the production run even if it is continually evolved or shuffled as to how it is optioned.

They have to be considering many, many options right now for all the trim levels in all markets but the Alpha cars, I would hope, are introduced soon after the first model year rather than later and *kept* in production for the entire run of the A90.

To be fair, @A70TTR didn't like or comment on my $120K price estimate. I based the MSRP upon my experience in (and mostly out of) the automotive industry. No more. I have no super seekrit information.

$120k from some dealers wishing to mark up that high I can see. But for most dealers even with the low allocation and some markup I’d be surprised to see it go that high.

I’ve got nothing to go on but my own perception of what I expect but much as it would still hurt I can see the Alpha realistically being $79k at best to $95k at worst.

$95k at worst WITH the inevitable dealer markup. But $120k after markup would be a bit much.

Now I’m eager to soon learn how close or far off I am :/

Anything more than $70-$75k for a Toyota sports car is pushing it for me. I know dealers will mark these up nasty initially....but, they have to consider where the brand resides on the pyramid. I don't know if I can cough up anything more than $75k for the top tier car. @A70TTR and my source have both mentioned they will be pricey, and that they will be more than a RC-F. That could mean $1k more or $10k more....I might have to wait for a second hand .

Totally agree with you on the pricing. But if these cars are in fact amazing I can’t see used ones being any cheaper, it’ll deff be a sellers market.
