All of this reminds me so much of the Toybaru twins. Years after it came out there were constant rumors of a faster turbo car coming but it never happened. And all of Tada’s claims that it will be improved over time fell short of expectations.

Yes there were changes, the car got refreshed and got a few “special edition” trims. Subaru has the TS which has mechanical upgrades like brakes and suspension but ultimately what people wanted never happened, more power.

And now Tada is playing the same tune that changes will be made over time and that owners who bought older models should be able to upgrade. That should tell you a MT probably isn’t happening, neither is some esoteric godly GRMN car with more power and a bespoke iron block motor. None of those decisions are financially viable and this car was born out of sacrifice by partnering with BMW to save money. If a faster car does come it’ll be an unrestricted B58 with 380hp. And it wouldn’t have a manual because of Tada’s focus on shift feel. A DCT yeah sure.

One of the biggest give aways for no stick to me was when the leaked designs came out and the weird grab handle to give the illusion of the slingshot cockpit was in the driver’s side. Knowing this cars emiphasis on driving dynamics and experience, a clear obstruction to a shift lever would never have been there otherwise.

I love the design, the price is appropriate and it seems like it’ll drive great and sound great. The B58 will be tunable as most BMW boosted motors have been and the aftermarket will do great things with the platform. I think people should take a moment and think like a bean counter before rationalizing fantasies. End rant.

I'll add a though in response to Tada-san's own quote: "If the Supra had a manual transmission, there's nowhere for the 86 to go."

No, this is not true. The 86 is a naturally aspirated car. Not everyone is going to or can legally even get away with (California for instance) turbocharging a factory naturally aspirated car and still keep their car registered easily.

The Supra on the other hand, auto or manual, already comes turbocharged from the factory with FAR more power. And it can easily be modified for more power reliably since it already came turbocharged by design.

A manual gearbox 86 and manual gearbox Supra simply allow a buyer/owner of either car to experience a more direct and enjoyable connection with their respective cars.

The 86 has an important place in the Toyota lineup because not everyone can afford even a $50k sportscar (that has only two seats to boot). But $25k for a true driver's car that is reliable and easy to live with every day albeit with much less power is still very important.

Not everyone can afford a Supra but everyone should be able to afford even a modest pure driver's car in the 86 with a manual transmission. That remains one of the 86's biggest strengths: VERY affordable pure driving fun.

The introduction of the Supra and with a manual option will only sway over potential buyers for who the 86 is affordable and who felt that the 86 wasn't enough of what they wanted in the first place.

Big if true, but I definitely havent heard anything of that nature on this end.

That said, a different transmission is coming, that's all I will say. It's further out than some of these folks think though.
I'm not going to prod on this topic as you've already made your point clear but whatever they're planning also has me interested, manual or not.

Plenty of cool stuff on the horizon and yet folks continually forget, like every few hours, that this is a Gazoo Racing vehicle from the ground up (the debut vehicle at that)

Toyota badge is there as a sign of respect, but it's their car and as such everything is different about how things will be handled. They have their own budgets, personell, and the list goes on and on.

Anyhow, long day of testing today and I'm wore out...

I don’t think Tada is referencing the 3.0 here. I think he’s talking about the 4cyl models for foreign markets. Specifically the lowest trim with 197hp. A manual option on that vehicle would put the 86 in a tough position in foreign markets as the price difference would possibly be nominal enough for consumers to jump to the Supra manual with a nicer design and interior over the 86. I’m betting on a DCT in a performance variant in reference to A70’s cryptic quote.

The R&T article is political jargon in which he doesn’t want to give a definitive statement. Tada mentioned stick shift mules in the past so very obviously it is possible, even if they didn’t “anything is possible” translates to...anything is possible. They could drop a LFA engine in there if they wanted to because “anything is possible” We all know he knows consumers are crying for a manual as hundreds of journalist and fans have said it right to his face.

At this point what I want to know is what does Toyota want consumers to do to prove demand for a manual.

They keep saying “if the demand is there” without blatantly saying what would prove that. There’s a huge poll showing demand, every person who has seen the car and is a potential buyer is asking whether or not a manual is available and every journalist has pointed out the lack of it.

I think they’re just going to let this ride until a few years from now they make the PR claim that “there was overwhelming demand for the Supra even with its amazing ZF 8 speed transmission with shifts faster than you in bed blah blah and therefore we felt the market didn’t need a manual”
