Hey everyone!
Good to be on this forum, with a lot of knowledgeable people and supra enthusiasts. The advice you guys share is much appreciated and really helps for people like myself who are quite new to the scene.

I am really keen on buying an auto supra (located in Aus).

There’s only 19 auto supras on carsales in the whole country from 2020 up.

A 2020 supra GT came up which is a pretty good deal compared to the rest of the market - stock, Toyota certified preowned, only 24000km and listed up for about 70.4K.

Ideally I was hoping to own the car to daily and sell in like 5 years, not track or go too crazy on mods (mostly cosmetic).

Ideally I was looking at buying around 2022 year for pricing reasons. There’s a 2023 GTS with 17000km for about 84k to give some idea of the market.

What would everyone recommend? Should I get the 2020, use the saved money for upgrades? Or should I just be patient, see what else comes out, get a newer one for more but at least it’ll be newer when I sell it / potentially more reliable since it’s a newer car?

stuck in two minds, any help would be much appreciated!

I’m buying the car outright, so reliability and resale value are big to me - don’t want it to be a money pit essentially
I have a 2022 and know lots of other people with new and old ones. Like any car, buy the newest year with the lowest miles you can afford. Unless you know you want to unlock that puppy, then look for a 2020-2021 that you can unlock, with the lowest miles. Even if you can’t unlock it, BMWAF has a great write up on how to ship yours out and get it back unlocked ?. Factor in that extra ~1000 bucks to do so…. You can always do more mods to the car later. Ask me how I know ?. Besides the wind buffeting thang, there’s no rush to do anything. If you’re gonna track her, then you’ll add some camber plates, better pads, fluid, tires, brake lines, nothing major…. Happy hunting!!

Legend man I appreciate the advice! Hahaha I don’t think I need to ask, sounds like a deep, expensive love.

I think it’s something I’ll consider regarding tuning etc. The market currently is just so thin, and they’ve already gone up in price since last year. There’s nothing between 2020 and 2023, and the difference in price between these two years is like 15k.

I’ve put a deposit down for a 2020 GTS for 68.5…. Iffy with it not having warranty, but still a good deal

Early cars can be tuned without sending your ECU to Femto but as Phil pointed out, there are reports of oil pump/consumption issues with some pre-2022 cars. And while I'm not keen on opening yet another auto/manual debate, anything pre-2023 is dead to me. ?

With production ending soon - and Australian deliveries likely drying up six months before that - I suspect these cars are about to go up in price in the short to medium term.. or at the very least hold their value a little better than your numbers suggest.

Controversially, as it doesn't come with a HUD, I wouldn't even look at a GT. Having said this - and depending on which state you are in - $70k seems quite a low-ball for a good example.. even if it is just for a GT.

Best of luck.
Thank you my man, really appreciate that. Ye I’ve dedicated the last 4 weeks researching these cars hahaha.
The market in Australia is terrible for them, there’s no 21 or 22s for sale at an expected price. There are two 2023s for 85 which I can afford, but it is definitely stretching my budget or making me pay more than I would want to ideally.

I have put a deposit down for a 2020 GTS for 68.5, car is in perfect condition with low Kms (~25k). It doesn’t have warranty which worries me but I don’t think it’ll be a lemon. Saves me a little money to get a wing, lip, potentially tune.

Keep in mind that along with the manual transmission, 2023s had some upgrades to their suspension. Also, early models - not sure what model year it was changed - have lowered power ratings compared to the rest.

Have already had it fully PPF'd, Installed the RKTi Sig Dual exit exhaust, on Rays Gramlights %&CR in Gloss Grey, HKS carbon intake and HKS interior mats. Hasn't even got 1000km on it yet ;). Still need to get the DME unlock done and then catless DP and tune.

Quite like the grey wheels but I think I'd get tired of it pretty quickly. Whenever I see a new colour/look I ask myself if it's just the "different factor" that's attracting me and it often is. "Different" is transient, "classic" "stylish" or "elegant" is not. The Supra looks good in black though.
I guess if the wheel look does get old updating the colour is pretty straight forward

Anyone tried anyone of the multiple number plate holders that attach to tow cable

I want to know which ones don't interfere with parking sensors if anyone has trialled any?

I've not tried one primarily because they look shite. I have this fitted and I organised the car to be delivered without the Toyota front plate mount abomination screwed to the front clip. You can buy the Aussie/European plate version as well.

What style of plate number do you have? I had a look at the Perrin but I have a slimline prestige QLD plate and it would've required modification on the bracket.

If you already have holes, I recommend the Flow Bracket. Annoyingly, they won't sell you the plinth without a matching number plate bracket. Definitely an expensive exercise for some 3D printed plastic with threaded screw inserts... Thankfully, the black paint and included screws hide the extra holes well.

Edit: Wrong quote. I meant to quote maniac. Oops.

Yes, I purchased this one. However, to make it fit I needed to 3D print some adaptor plates. Basically any option i could find required some modification to tuck behind AU slimline plates. It works fine although if it was about 2CM shorter it would be perfectly flush with the top of the opening that it sits in. Needed to also add some rubber washers (used plumbing o rings) in-between the nut's/bolt the so that it didn't come loose and rotate. No issues with parking sensors.

Just by way of update I finally received some confirmation that my car was being built last weekend. How long do you guys think until I receive the car (based in Sydney)?

Sorry but that isn’t a confirmation of anything. Those emails have proven to be wildly inaccurate.
