mystery solved, thanks for the advice everyone!i put a camera in the sub frame to see what was up and i think @i3igpete was right that it was the retaining clip for the mass dampener. the road dirt over the years made it cemented in there but a good hammer whack on the clip got it loose.

with the camera in there, I saw what it was and saw that the clip had a lip that extended just outside the access hole. from the outside you wouldn’t think it was connected but it was after pulling it out.

after popping the clip, the new insert went in flat and i was able to finish the install!

@rwense great product! i might recommend adding to the instructions that little bit about the retaining clip being in the sub frame. Some, like myself, might not know about it being there and that it needs to be removed. Instructions just detail about the dampener being removed and doesn’t specify the clip.

Quick thanks and bump for this post, saved me a lot of time, hopefully helps someone else… also I used a flat head, put it into the bolt hole and pried it out.

Just remember, the brace rigidly mounts the diff so NVH is expected. Personally I have noticed a small clunk starting from a stop or applying load when under <5mph but its never been repeatable on command. More than likely its either slight movement of the diff or another drivetrain component.

I wouldn't be too concerned šŸ™‚

Also, those wedgelock washers should prevent any movement of the bolt, but id still paint mark them just so you dont have to get under the car and check.
Honestly I get the same sensation without the diff brace (still need to install it lol). I don't hear a clunk but feel a subtle thud occasionally on more abrupt acceleration. Especially from a stop or slow speeds. But like you said not repeatable on command.

On a serious note, what fluid did you use?

I think I’ve seen @razorlab mention Motul Gear 300 before but I’m unsure if it was the LS or non-LS formulation.

I have PTSD from my previous M340i because I used Redline fluid and it eventually developed a clunk when loading or unloading the drivetrain. Swapped the bushings, guibos, driveshaft, pretty much everything before finally realizing it was the diff and likely due to the fluid used.

Here is what I have used in order of history:

1. Liqui Moly GL4/5 75w90 (22090)
2. Motul Gear 300 75w90 (105777)
3. Mix of Motul Gear 300 75w90 (105777) + Motul Gear Competition 75w140 (105779)

Every car I've ever changed it on I've always gone OEM. I'm not a "only use OEM" kind of person but for diffs, transfer cases (when applicable) and so on - there are so many varieties I just don't feel the need to out-think the people that designed the car. I'm certain other options would be fine but I don't know of any way in which they are better such that I feel the need to jump over to them.

What is this witchcraft you're mixing up and what are you seeing or reason for this?

I'm probably going to go back to straight 75w90. I tried the mix to see if the heavier weight would be better for track use but I didn't really notice any change. So for me, non mixing is way easier.
