Hey guys new here, needed some help clarifying.

I recently got a GR Supra, turns out it has a CPO engine warranty still for a few years. I am looking at doing a piggyback to add some additional power.

I come from a MK8 Golf R, where a piggyback didn’t pop any flags IF I needed to go to a dealer for warranty work. Wasn’t sure if BMW/Toyota would flag it at all. If so am I best just keeping to what I got?

Also, is there an advantage to this platform with adding strut bars, or should I pass for the time being and just swap the sway bars? Been hearing mixed answers and been told to swap just one sway bar to doing nothing or everything.

thank you!

In theory, a jb4 can trigger a permanent shadow code (s0777 suspicion of tuning) that gets silently recorded at the dealer. Can a dealer look the other way? Sure. Will YOUR dealer look the other way? Don't know. Is the Toyota and BMW backend integration so poor where it has a good chance it gets lost in the void? Probably.

Adding: JB4 alone will not do much unless you add ethanol.

If your car dosen't have the strut brace, adding it will make a difference.

They likely won`t look the other way if something massive happens though. That`s when Toyota gets involved and demands to see the logs to approve engine replacement. But for small things it likely can be more at dealer discretion.

I have a JB+ plugged in under the engine cover. I have some work coming up and honestly Im thinking about just leaving it in. If there is a chance it silent coded it doesn't matter anyway. Even if we know the + likely wont be the cause of a failure, Toyota is gonna fight it regardless I'm sure so I don't think anybody can give you a confident answer.

My dealer damaged my car during the software recall. They acknowledged it and then backed out lol. So that’s a can of worms.

I figured doing a vivid racing plugin or other variant might be worth while. Just don’t know for sure.

I just know some guys get the Dinan strut bars or Blitz ones. Wasn’t sure if there is a serious improvement or just looks on the chassis.

I am hoping nothing catastrophic happens comes 2029-2030. My car is at 35k miles so far. Power train is covered until then, but if Toyota will throw a fit then I’d rather just do a full tune later lol.

There is already a firewall-triangulated strut bar on the car that goes under the wiper cowl and weatherstrip that sadly nobody makes upgrades for. That being said, i do have some dinan bars for sale in the classifieds section.

Its really rare to see a catastrophic event like engine or transmission failure while still under warranty. Its even rarer for someone to have a catastrophic event AND have a piggyback. Then report back to the forums that Toyota (or BMW) never found any hidden traces of a tune/piggyback. Probably isn`t a single reported case of this on the forums.

Yes there are probably reported cases of people getting warranty repairs with tuned Supras. And yes if you take off the piggyback it won`t raise any concerns from a visual point of view. But when something really bad happens. That`s when these manufactures actually look with more details.

per all the data we have, as long as you remove the piggyback before your dealership visit , you should not encounter any issues.

Even this comment right here is kind of vague. Are you saying from a visual point of view it won`t raise any red flags or are you saying removing the device removes all traces of the device from the system?

Whether it removes all traces or not isn’t really what I’m trying to say. I’m talking about what we’ve seen from actual data and experience over the years. If the piggyback is removed from the car, in the rare event that something does happen, dealerships typically don’t dig deep enough to look for traces of a previously installed piggyback, even if those traces may still exist.

So there’s a very high possibility that you’ll be fine. But if you want a 100% guarantee with absolutely no risk, then the only real option is to keep the car completely stock.

That`s fair a assessment I would say.

I think you would be better off unlocking the DME with the Mission Tuning tool then backing up your DME. Then you can get a real tune and if you ever need to go back to stock you can reflash and lock it.

My dealer looked the other way and bought the car back at 44K (2021 Premium 3.0 with 40K miles) which at the time I felt like was a good trade in value for tax purposes however I let them handle all the maintenance and it was mint. I moved into a 2025 MT.
