I’m about to pull my car apart to TESA and foam tape panels and harnesses. I’m getting more rattles over time due to the subwoofer that I added. I have noticed some harness routing clips are terrible as they do not “latch” by design and they count on insulation and panels to hold them in place. A few panels in the trunk seem to rattle on bass hits that I need to address as well.

So here is a new issue. Wonder if anyone else out there has had this. The display (LCD screen) is rattling uncontrollably (it’s almost as though dust or something is caught somewhere). It’s not the actual unit moving but just the LCD screen inside the unit. I can post a video on YouTube if it helps. The dealership told me the first time they can’t replace it because it doesn’t happen all the time and to bring it in when it is doing it. I work two jobs and go to school so that’s impossible because it’s so sporadic. I will be taking it back this Friday again.

So, I have a new rattle that is officially driving me nuts and I can't seem to figure out what it is without puling the whole dash apart.

While driving if I hit small cracks or very minor bumps in the road the steering column/gauge cluster rattles unbearably. It is such an annoying sound. I attempted to put some felt between the cluster cover and plastic panel (dash) where the two meet, but that did not solve it.

Sound occurs regardless of temperature, and the suspension is 100% stock. The only thing I have done is replaced the paddle shifters with carbon ones, but that was months ago and I rechecked them they are bolted down tight.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

Thanks,
-V

Yep. Worse in sport mode, and definitely dependent on road conditions. I think it's part of the steering column wiring which is loose and rattling against the dash/cluster housing itself. It disappears on me for awhile and then comes back... one of these days I'll get down inside there and zip tie everything down as much as possible or line with foam. Can't see it being fixed without doing that.

You literally just explained the exact scenario I go through.

It disappears for a bit, then all of a sudden starts rattling nonstop.

Yea, I have to officially devote a day to pull it apart and really see whats going on.

Thank you for chiming in, now I know i'm not going crazy haha.

Cheers,
-V

Pretty sure I have had this since Day 1. Doesn't happen every second, but I definitely get this sound. Sounds like it is in the foot-well area for me. I think that is a normal "BMW" ending ticking sound.

Maybe someone with more expertise can chime in?

Cheers,

This is what I have from my phone. Not the best quality, but if you raise the volume up you can make out a ticking sound.

I was in a rush today to beat the weather home (car is staying in my shop) so I will try and get some tomorrow. It’s really, really feint so it may not even pick up. It almost sounds like very quiet rod knock lol

Works now! I can't say I've heard that on mine, but now I know what to look for. Will let you know if I have it or not.

Yea, it doesn't happen every single time I drive. It happens for a short period during idle only, then just goes away. I got used to it and assume it was normal as the car was driving perfectly fine, and one year later (5000 miles) and everything still seems fine.
