Today while my car was Idling I could hear a small consistent knock in the dash/ trans area
Here is a video of the noise I’m having. It’s not as loud in person and it comes and goes
I'm actually having the same issue now at 2000 miles. Haven't noticed it until a couple weeks ago when I was sitting in my car after driving home from work. Car was idling low around 600rpm because I had the A/C turned off and I noticed that exact same "knocking/tapping" noise. Not sure what it is either.
This very issue just started up for me as well....

Only at idle, at a very narrow rpm range (600~650 rpm), I get this faint tapping / drumming finger noise which sounds like its coming from somewhere in the front center dash area between the steering wheel and center vent ...If I tap the accelerator lightly to get above ~700rpm rpm it disappears...need to track down the source...

Anyone had any luck locating the cause / source?

I think its the plastic covering above the brake and gas pedals. It is held in place by plastic knobs that turn (I'm sure there is a specific name for them I just don't know it.) It is a little bit loose and will rattle against the metal underneath it. I put some stick on felt in the one spot in between the plastic and the metal. The noise is gone. I found out what was causing it accidently. I was sitting at stop light, and the noise got annoying, so I pressed my left leg against the plastic and the noise stopped. I can try to get a picture if it is needed.

I have a similar issue when at idle and the car is stopped I can hear a little whine sound coming from the front but when you drive it you don't hear it is that the same issue that you have?

Still not having any luck hunting down the source of this soft tapping sound which seems to occur in the front cabin in the area between the steering wheel, center console, an above the accelerator pedal area ...There is definitely something lightly tapping against a panel ...This only occurs during initial cold startup and at a very narrow rpm range (600~650 rpm) ....Once I take it out for a short drive and return and park I can no longer replicate the tapping sound again at any low idle range...

I tried removing the plastic top cover under the drivers side footwell above the pedals and that did nothing to eliminate the soft tapping...

Any suggestions?

It sounds exactly like this video posted below

Would you mind posting a picture of the general area that you fixed?

Thanks,

In my case it's almost always the opposite - being that it usually occurs at the end of a spirited drive (and almost exclusively when driving in sport mode on rougher stretches of pavement). I have noticed it a couple of times early on, but usually it's after 15-20 minutes of driving.

It seems almost the entire dash area could stand to have a bit more insulation or at least better tethering of harnesses, panel reinforcement, etc. But then again I'm sure if all of that, and more, would have been done to completely eliminate rattles and noise... then we'd all be bitching about how heavy the car was. :p

I had this occasional metal to metal rattle over sharp bumps on my Supra coming from the passenger side which I narrowed down to the passenger side seat belt. It did not matter whether a passenger wearing a seat belt was onboard or not.

Below is a picture of the anchor end of the buckle where the passenger would buckle up to between the passenger seat and passenger door. The plastic cover is pulled backwards to expose the metal parts.

I made a spacer shaped like the red line drawing with the blue dotted area cut out so that I could slide it between the metal parts. I used a polycarbonate sheet I had to make this (a little thicker than an over head transparency) to dampen the noise. I suppose one can try it using a note card.

Worked great, no more noise...!

How on earth were you able to slide that in there? There’s no room to work! Seems to need one on each side of the apparatus, & the the inserts need to be placed near the bottom. When I try to insert with a tweezer, my knuckles are in the way.

I used a pair of long nose pliers.

I forgot to post this here in this thread...

I had the door panels off a few months ago working on the speakers and while they were off I applied a 1/4" adhesive backed foam pad under the door lock plunger rod area (shown below)...The helped to stabilize the door lock plunger rod and fixed the rattle issue...
