First, it's the 2UR. The AA80E is old (first 8 speed ever if I remember correctly), but statistically it has no reliability issues at all and it shifts pretty quick for it's age. Not crap by any means. The direct shift 10 speed in the LC is no slouch either.

The only issue with the 2UR is that it only comes in heavy sedans and coupes, otherwise it sounds amazing and makes very decent numbers for its age being NA in a world of FI german and American V6/V8s.

The Supra should have gotten the next Lexus performance engine, a TT V6 like the V35A. If it did, even with only an auto, all the haters would shut up (probably not the manny tranny lovers though).

by "crap" I was referring to the gearing. I'm sure it's reliable; most if not everything by Toyota generally is. I distinctly remember test driving the IS-F and whenever i wanted to shift even remotely close redline, it wouldn't shift and it would just "beep" which was incredibly annoying and ultimately what killed the deal for me.

It would sound cool to have a manual transmission Supra. But what about its positioning with the 86? I believe if there would be a manual Supra, then Toyota would most likely kill the 86. Also the big question is, if the manual will arrive, will it be made available with the inline-4 or inline-6?

Back to the question, if I could choose between a new Toyota built Inline 6 or a Manual for the new Supra, Toyota I6 hands down. I am a manual lover for sure, but a missing transmission option is a solvable problem via the aftermarket. Not an easy problem to solve at all in this day and age if you want it to be an oem like conversion, but a B58 is always going to be a BMW motor. It will always have Vanos and it will always have an aluminum block with plasma welded iron bores (which means all piston upgrades, broken rings, standard rebuilds etc require sleaving). I would kill to have a new Toyota Inline 6 put into production, no problem. Infact I would whole heartedly embrace this bastard car we've been given if it had a new performance Toyota heart beating under its hood. I would even go out and buy one new, which is something I don't personally believe in (sorry, new cars are a horrible waste of money).

I see... as much as I want a manual to happen, I think Toyota will reserve it to the performance-oriented variants, or hopefully they could introduce it in the coming years when the Supra gets a refresh/update.

Toyota lumps perspective Supra buyers into one of three groups:

Group 1: Those that actually want an AT, and would buy one even if a MT were available.
Group 2: Those that want a MT, but will grit their teeth and buy an AT if it's the only choice.
Group 3: Those that will only purchase a Supra with a MT.

The annual sales target for the new Supra is low enough that Toyota thinks it can get there with only Group 1 and 2 buyers. Offering a MT would mean raising sales numbers to offset the cost of R&D, and Toyota believes that there aren't enough Group 3 buyers to do that. My heart wants to disagree, but when you look at the fact that less then 1 in 4 new Corvette sales are manuals... I start to wonder.

I believe Toyota would prioritize manual over automatic only if people STOP buying automatic, and buy manual instead.

I think for Far North Australian, I understand what your saying , but for 90% of us, we would like to be more involved with our car and the enjoyment of shifting up/down ourselves, weather that makes it half a second slower..who cares. Its about driver enjoyment for what the car was built for, and for many it means a MANUAL!! Please TADA SAN, bring us a manual in the GRMN edition with all the bells and whistles (in terms of aero)...Look at what Porsche did with the Cayman GT4 and the new GT3 - Both sports cars showing Porsche listen to there consumers, because those consumers want more driver involvement, and there is no better auto box than the PDK...I don't think they care either about the half sec they loose to 100km.
+ TOYODA SAN loved his Supra and never wrote it off, he just admitted his car was much older than all the latest new production cars running the green hill etc...
