that’s exactly what I mean. Someone with a super early 21 6 port that has the oil pump problem needs to post up and verify if they have the bolts or not. Mine is a 01-21 build, I have the new bolts and no issues. Do any 6 ports really have the old bolts?
There are plenty of 6-ports with plastic pumps. This is well-documented. It's interesting that Toyota changed the bolt grade from 8.8 to 10.9, though.

can you show me the proof? I have never seen a 21 with the 8.8 bolts.

I'll check mine tonight. I have a 21 with an early 6 port and unlocked ECU. No pump issues after many track days.

I have a 2020 LE (earliest of the early Supras) and also have had no issue over 70+ track days, using 5w40 forbidden fruit oil, and upped oil pressure to mid 9Xpsi at WOT (OEM is 79psi). Doesn't mean it's not going to happen.

I have an upgraded oil pump ready to go but have been lazy as it's not a small job.

To add to the query, my 2021MY is also an early six port with a build date of 3/2020 and the bolt shows a 10.9. I'm definitely curious to see if any of the six port B58s do have an 8.8 bolt.

2021, 06/2020, 6port, 10.9 bolts.
My pump starting failing at ~35k miles.
Started with 0w-20, started using 0w-40.
Upgraded to metal pump.

I'd say..... if your build date is 11/2020 or older, just plan to do the pump.

I'm also using the devils own 5w40 oil weight on my 2020, and have been flex fuel tuned for over 20k miles with no issues yet. Hopefully my pump was built on a lucky day.

2020 MY z4 m40i. US spec for us only came with 6 port. 10.9 bolts, still had plastic oil pump.

Pump never “failed” but it wouldn’t maintain oil pressure target once it hit certain temps on track. Used 30, 40 and 50 weight oils.

So even people with super early 21s don’t have the other bolts. Seems like this is more of a 2 port vs 6 port thing. Not a you have a plastic oil pump thing.

There isn't any specific circumstances that cause the failures with the plastic-insides oil pumps of the earlier B58's. If you can read your oil level just fine (i.e. the i-drive oil level check completes instead of stopping half way) you're safe for now. There is literally nothing you can do to prevent it from happening except replace your pump early if you know yours is one of the plastic ones.

2021 3.0 manufacture date 10/2020, was never able to read oil level when I got the car used at 20k miles, got the oil pump and oil pressure regulation engine codes and CEL at about 28K miles. Replaced by 3rd party shop, no issues since.
Which 3rd party shop did you use to replace your oil pump? I'm also in the Tampa Bay with a 2020. 52K no issues so far. Want to know just in case.

I'm in the exact same position. We were going to swap the oil pump and check and refresh rod bearings.
But now thinking we may as well just build the engine and get a bigger turbo

RBK European Auto Repair in Largo. Did a flawless job on both instances I needed something fixed (the other being a broken window actuator), and in the case of the oil pump they even let me inspect the undercarriage and engine bay + showed me the damaged pieces of the old pump before finalizing to ensure I was happy with the work. Didn't take long either, ordered the parts and scheduled the install day, dropped the car off early morning, got it back after work the following day.

This is a stupid question, but how do you know if your oil pump is failing.

I have a 2020 unit, and this afternoon it showed low oil after 3000 miles, asking me to top up 1 quart , during this time, it refused to do the full measurement and stopped around 20%, and just said oil at minimum level, top up 1 quart.

I filled it, and then when i tried to measure after, it couldn't complete/go beyond 21% for like more than 7 times.

In the evening, i tried to measure, and it suddenly did, and i tried again the next morning after going for some spirted driving. It refused to after the drive, but completed it again after letting it cool down for 15 mins.

When the test is going on, i could hear a whirring sound at the back, which i imagine is the sound of the oil pump, pumping.

Now im kind of lost as too whether i should replace it now, or wait until its starting to fail, and im wondering what does starting to fail sound like (as from what i read, its a disaster if it fails). would be accurate that i would hear the oil pump whirring sound if it was failing during a normal drive as it would need to work hard to maintain oil pressure?

Is there signs in terms of codes, sounds, notifications etc etc? Im thinking of going to a shop to measure oil pressure as i dont have an obd.
