Good day everyone.

I recently was involved in an accident where the passenger curtain airbag deployed. Has anyone had any issues with programming their air bag? I am tuned but since have reverted back to stock and also disconnected my Motiv Reflex so ensure the there was not any CANBUS issues. Thanks in advance.

I think I can help, both of my curtains airbags are deployed.
I'm currently awaiting the driverside (at 1months), expect long lead times.

Airbags do not need to be programmed, applies to all airbags I believe.
They work off of resistance.
Typically the car expects between 1 - 5 Ohms per airbag, per stage as well.
The curtains are single-stage (1 pyrotechnic).

The airbag ECU (ACSM) will hold up to 3 crash datapoints (crashes) until it needs to be replaced & reprogrammed, then its $$$$ or $$$$$.

In your case:
Buy a new airbag (62170-WAA01 - Passenger (Right) Curtain airbag)
Please double/triple check part number(s) before ordering.
Some dealers do not take returns.

Disconnect battery and wait 15mins or more
Very important! Could set off another related circuitry (another airbag).

Install new airbag (or 3.3 Ohm resistor, if testing)
Reconnect power/battery
(May need to enter diagnostic mode)
(Foot off of brake, tap Start 1 time to enter ACC, then tap Start 3 times quickly)
Clear codes
If successful, lights on dash (Kombi) and notification on infotainment (HU-H) should disappear.

Before you order a new airbag, you can test with a 3.3 Ohm 1/2 Watt resistor to simulate an airbag, and also clear codes to check if your airbag circuitry & diagnostic tool works.
Follow same steps/procedure as above.
To clear codes, I'm using Toyota ISTA. Bimmercode/link/utility may work as well.
Cheap resistors available on Amazon/eBay.

The headliner will need to be dropped to make removal/installing easier but not entirely removed.
Just rest it on the steering wheel and seats.
See page 2884 of the workshop manual: https://www.supramkv.com/threads/workshop-service-manual.2415/post-138353
Visual diagram/illustation on page 2881/2882.

The curtain airbags do need a special BMW tool to pull out the metal retaining clips.
I don't have the tool# for it, but its a major pain without it.
Can work around by using 2 small flathead screwdrivers, or just cut them out since deployed airbag is trashed anyways. New retaining clips are apart of the new airbag.
Be careful if cutting as whatever is left/dropped in the pillar is stuck inside the chassis.

Thanks so much for the quick and detailed response. The mobile programmer they sent out ended up figuring it out. "Supposedly" he said he ran out of ram on his computer and that's why he couldn't figure it out. It might have been his firewall as well. Should definitely PIN this in case anyone else needs help.

Thanks again!

So say I wanted to go to an airbagless steering wheel. Could I essentially make a dummy plug with a resistor to remove the airbag light?

Yes, takes 3 resistors.
(2) for the dual stage airbag, (1) for another circuit, from what I remember.
I did it to test the circuitry.

Basically the 6wire yellow plug:
(1) resistor for White + Brown
(1) resistor for Purple + Green
(1) resistor for Black + Black
3.3 Ohm 1/2 Watt resistors used.

The Blue + Black (2wire) plug, I believe is the horn.

My blown airbag with with resistors:

So this is what I’m looking at. What do I need to do?

Left plug, however you wish to connect them.
(3) 3.3 Ohm 1/2 Watt resistors.

Could depin the existing plug and wire in the resistors.

Have to clear codes, since they went open circuit.
Lights wont go away on their own.

I already put it all together and it didn’t work. ?. I wonder if it is tied into the the other conector
I'm not 100% sure, but I think the part circled has to be wired in. In this video they just throw in the resistor, but that black piece is wired in. Once the airbag harness is installed, the airbag light is gone.

Sorry to revive this thread, but when you say the module stores 3 crashes did you mean 3 separate crashes? Or just 3 airbag deployments? I had 4 pop do I need to send the module out or am I good to put them in and just clear the codes? Thanks!
