That's because there were JZ engines sold new until 2007. Toyota generally employs a 15yr part support rule IIRC and in some cases longer based on demand.

They discontinued the 2J non vvti heads once already and some key players had to petition Toyota to make more. They now do low volume production here and there to keep inventory, but eventually they'll be gone again.

Another interview via Goauto talking about a hypothetical S58 Supra.

Asked if that support might come in the form of a different inline six-cylinder engine, such as BMW’s twin-turbocharged S58 unit that motivates the recently launched 375kW/600Nm M Competition versions of the X3 and X4 mid-size SUVs, Mr Tada said that is a possibility, adding that it could fit in the Supra’s engine bay.

His view is at odds with that of BMW M GmbH chairman of the board of management Markus Flasch, who told Australian journalists, including GoAuto, in May that a higher-performing version of the Supra’s Z4 cousin with the S58 unit was not being pursued due to the significant re-engineering that would be required to fit it.

Either way, Mr Tada said the potential introduction of the S58 engine or a manual transmission “will maybe be delayed” until later in the Supra’s lifecycle.

If the 86 didn't upgrade it's engine, the Supra won't either
I don't know about the whole S58 thing, but that is a silly statement to make. This is BMW we're talking about. If you own their cars or follow their trend you would know that BMWs generally get engine upgrades through out their life-cycle. Using the old E89 Z4 for example. In 2011, the NA I6 models were replaced with the tubro 4 cylinder.

^yup, unlike Toyota, BMW doesn't continue to use 12yo engines for their $100k flagship coupe. im looking at you Lexus...

Regardless. All the aftermarket development is going to be for this b58 variant we have now. All the aftermarket is being engineered and built as we speak. This platform is running mid tens. Why do we need a new engine exactly?

^^ Agreed. I'm just very interested in a stout factory 6-speed manual gearbox. The B58C is great already and the "horsepower bump" version (B58D?) should do plenty aside from the GRMN Supra.
