Clutch Slipping on stock A91 MT...

Unfortunately, if the dealer does a teardown, they aren't likely to find a problem. They'll probably only see the results of slipping (ie. hot spots).

I sense that you have prior experience with manual transmissions. Enough so that you can tell the difference between defect and out right abuse but that assumption may be wrong. While I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt, the dealer would be the one sticking their neck out and are less inclined. Reach out to Toyota customer care and get a conversation started with them.

Also, there are no readily available clutch replacement parts at any toyota, my buddy has also been calling for that too, no luck.

So an interesting situation I found myself in today... I dropped my car off for some warranty items (new speakers, replace harness bar rattle, chassis malfunction) and to inform them of an issue I experienced. So about 2 months ago while accelerating from 2nd and then shifting into 3rd I experienced a total "lack of clutch" It slipped completely from about 3k to redline, at first I did not even realize what was happenings as it wasn't just a little slip and it caught, nope acted as if it had no clutch left at all, I let off, and accelerated again completely fine through all the gears, (albeit a very strong smell of burnt clutch for 3-4 hours) It was weird and unsettling but I chalked it up to fluke.( I did mention it to the dealer while getting the first service and they noted it) Driving again the other night under very similar conditions the exact same thing happened under the exact same circumstance, accelerating and 2 to 3 shift. And the same hours of smell, I was with a passenger this time and we both came to the conclusion that this isn't just a fluke and the car acted as if it had no clutch at all, but then when doing the exact same thing 3-4 more times it would not slip again. Obviously there is an issue, heat damage somehow maybe? ( I actually broke the clutch in pretty strictly for the first 500 miles) Slave cylinder? Pivot pin? few different things it could be. All of this is fine and dandy as it is a brand new car with 3k miles and under full warranty, so no reason to worry as I have not done a single power mod, no tuning etc. Well today after dropping it off I got a call from my tech saying he reached out regarding the issue to their FST and other appropriate channels. I am told that the clutch is a wear item and is only under warranty for the first year /12k miles, great im at 3xxx and have had the car for less then 6 months! Nope, not that simple. They will look at it but only if I agree to pay a tear down fee, if something is found they will cover it and fix it, but if not I am stuck with the whole labor bill for them checking... So they won't even check till I pay thousands out of pocket and risk not getting it back if they "deem" there are no issues which I know there clearly is but not sure what it will take to find it! so it is definitely precarious I find myself in. The tech said he will call the Field service tech to come down locally and have me try and replicate the issue in front of him in hopes he waives the tear down fee bs. I have been absolutely loving my MT, truly an amazing platform but this really is not what I wanted to hear... for 3k miles and being at a stock power level... slipping is pretty unacceptable. Just a little "rant" and update on my A91 MT!

unfortunately it isn’t the dealer they are awesome and I have a great relationship with them. It’s corporate being difficult

If this does become a thing, surely Toyota will recall and upgrade the clutches on all MTs.

Highly doubt it. It's BMW parts. If Toyota ever does a recall, there needs correlation from BMW and Toyota, they need to work together. This is gonna take time and money.

I doubt it’s the same, but with my 2018 Mustang GT with a MT82 I had this same problem. Wasn’t just 2nd to 3rd. It just happened sometimes. I’d shift and it was like the clutch wasn’t engaged. I was able to duplicate it pretty regularly by quickly pressing the pedal and getting off. Like doing a pull. Took it to the shop, of course they couldn’t replicate it. Took the service advisor for a drive and did it 2-3 times then again with the service tech. They replaced the clutch but it didn’t fix the issue. They had to end up replacing the master and slave cylinders. I guess it was sticking or something. Once replaced I didn’t have an issue with it again.

The first thing I would check is the clutch fluid level isn't over filled.

I've zero knowledge about clutches and so on, but the B58 has already been paired with some manual transmissions here in europe, ex: M140I, M240I, M340i, M440I, etc.

I know the B58 from the supra is slightly different from all the other models I've mentioned here but maybe it would be interesting for your friend to look for the clutches from these models and see if they are somehow suitable for the A90.

1200 miles in here, with no issues yet. No power mods but have downpipe/exhaust in the mail and have been shopping tuning opportunities the last 2 days - sounds like waiting on the tune is advised.

Going to post this elsewhere but as it pertains here..:
Took the 20’ into the local dealer for service, where we bought the MT 60 days ago, and wound up leaving prior to service. After having an issue with their service writer previously, we were half-cocked. Long story short - they wouldn’t let me meet the Supra tech and insinuated any jabroni would do the work. (I just wanted to tip the guy and give a heads up on the mods) - but no dice.
So far - we’ve had poor luck with Toyota service on the Supras. I hope your dealer does better.
