Yeah. That's interesting. I haven't driven an FK8 or FL5 - Honda dealers wouldn't even let us test drive them here - but it's pretty disappointing if their gearboxes have gone backwards. Other than Porsche, Honda were the gold standard for a long time.
And Subaru's STI transmission. That rod driven transmission was incredible. Like a bolt action rifle.

Not to be confused with the WRX's cable driven sloppy ?

Another manual owner chiming in with no issues to date. I've driven both the auto and the manual and would recommend going with your gut - you'll get what you expect from both transmission choices

Thanks again for the replies. The focus of this thread was to clear the air about the reliability of the manual transmission. Based on input from owners, I believe my apprehension about the manual is unsupported. It really sucks that I can't drive both versions before purchasing, but I believe I would be happy with either. Based on availability, it appears I will likely end up with a 6MT.

As someone who went from an FK8 to a MT Supra, I can assure you the Manual is not better in the fk8, it is different but it's got a ton of slack/play and I have come to love the notchyness of the supra manual more.. especially after driving them back to back
Interesting take. I’ve driven the FK8, and my opinion is that it is a great transmission to use. Honda really knows how to put together a good manual transmission experience. Not only are the gears precise, short, and smooth as butter but the clutch action is easy to use and light. Is it better than the GR Supra? Maybe. Idk, it’s just a different style altogether.

CTR - easy and fun to use, very smooth
GR Supra - notchy, precise, fun but requires a little more finesse to get the gear changes smooth. Clutch is heavier (feels substantial compared to Honda), and friction/engagement point feels short or grabby.

Both transmissions certainly enhance the driver experience which is what is most important. This can’t be said of all manual transmissions out there.

Yep. You have to because I'm stepping on the brake as I'm blipping. That is how you heel and toe if you don't know how to do it. Some folks do left foot braking, but I'm more familiar with using my right foot since I drive MT 99% of the time on street.

You're comparing apples to oranges. You can't expect a mass produced road car transmission that will reliable transmit around 650-700 ft/lbs of torque to one designed to transmit reliable less than half of that. Big torque capability means large heavy gears and large heavy gears are harder to make shift clean and smooth unless you can reduce their mass with exotic materials and machining. A lighter duty trans has a natural advantage in shift quality over a medium-heavy duty trans and clutch package in a mass produced daily driver environment. Strip the supra box and machine the gears to lighten them and or use higher grade gear material with reduced gear widths and it will match a Honda gearbox but that's money.

I haven’t drive an FK8 but my bro has an FL5 that I’ve driven a few times. The shifter reminds me of the 08 Civic Si I had back in the day; just perfect, and I wouldn’t want to change anything about it. The clutch pedal has no feedback when starting out, though. Not sure how it compares to a manual Supra since I haven’t driven one. The Type R shifter is in a different league than my WRX for sure.

I drive a manual WRX and an auto Supra. I passed up on a manual Supra to wait for an auto. No regrets. First auto I’ve ever owned in 20+ years of driving and it’s awesome!

Bwahahaha…reminds me of when F&F first came out, and we were dumb kids in high school rowing thru our PRNDL2 shifter like we knew what we were doing. Lmao. Bro, I don’t think you need to heel-toe the almighty ZF8 transmission. I hear it’s doing a damn good job by itself.
