Hello Everyone.

Just bought my first car, being a 2021 GR Supra 3.0 (dream car is the mk4...maybe one day) it is used with 35.6k miles and 100% stock and i love it so far. After having it for a couple months i have some questions that i would like to ask.
1. i am knowledgeable on basic car mechanics (on on the old farm trucks and family cars) but nothing too in depth so helping explain things like I'm 5 would help haha

2. i like the power i feel in the car but am wanting more. what are my options in terms of increasing hp/torque as well as potentially going into a tune and maybe some engine upgrades?

3.any consistent problems that you have experienced? i noticed some rattling in the frame in the rear and its something I'm gonna look into further if anyone knows what could be causing that.

4. in relation to #2 is there an order to the list in terms of parts that should be higher priority to replace/upgrade over others or should it all be done in one sitting.

I'm happy to have this car and I'm happy to be apart of this community as its been a dream of mine.

Thank you for you help and time. :)

congrats man

you can start with a downpipe and jb4 and I think you'll be very happy. I had active autowerks DP and jb4 and had Jesse debears fine tune things which helped even out the power delivery. There is a lot of info re: the jb4 within the forums so just search that up, watch a view yt videos and you'll be good to go. Very easy to install yourself as well.

if you want an air intake that sounds good, armaspeed is pretty sweet

Don't think you will be ever going back to the MKIV, lol. People somehow forget how lousy they are compared to modern cars.

Your first question was more of a statement so I'm not really sure how to answer that one. Just take note that although its a Supra and a Toyota, this car has a heavy german heritage, so if you aren't used to anything on the euro side of the pond, you may find a bit of a culture shock when it comes to working on it (torx bits being a primary example.)

Your best bet with chasing power is likely going to be a tune. Intake and exhausts don't really accomplish too much on this car, its pretty well equipped from the factory. Basic bolt ons will help but they aren't going to provide tremendous gains on their own.

Rattling from the rear? I can't say mine has that issue, but getting it up on a lift will be an easy way to start diagnosis and a good first step.

The car is basically your blank canvas, so, poor taste aside, you should be fine to go whatever direction you want. Were it me, I'd start with an unlock and a tune. JB4 is okay for what it is, but its rather limited in what it can do once it reaches a certain point.

In terms of cost and efficiency, you will likely see the best gains doing an intake and exhaust at the same time and tuning for those mods after they have been installed.

I know I'll get smashed here but honestly on the power front if it's a road car just leave it stock. I mean a good one has 400hp or there abouts at the wheels and in this day and age that's enough to get you locked up. Most people and I mean 99% can't use that anyway skills wise on a RWD road car. Stick to cosmetic and maybe wheel and moderate chassis stuff. That's my advice to you.

2 - The only bolt-on that will give measurable performance gains is a downpipe, take your pick between a high-flow cat or a catless. Tends to make a pretty big difference in power, although a tune of some kind is needed to bring out the best of it (and prevent throttle closures in the case of catless). As for tuning, you can either go JB4 piggyback, or send your ECU to FEMTO (who now operates in Miami FL) to unlock so you can run MHD/BM3. At this point because the cost isn't far off from one another, I would just do the unlock and deal with the car being out of commission for a few days. I run a JB4 E40 map made by Jesse DaBears and it's quite a bit faster than stock (ballpark 440-450 WHP?), but my car came with JB4 when I bought it, otherwise I'd have unlocked from the start.

3 - For a 2021 a common problem is a failing oil pump caused by plastic components wearing down. 2022+ has an all-metal pump that lacks this issue. The way to check is to take a drive then park and try checking your oil level through idrive. If it fails to hit 100% then your pump is dying. Either check if you can have it replaced under warranty with Toyota (hit or miss buying used), or find a very well reviewed 3rd party shop (especially a BMW specialized one) and have it replaced. My replacement cost me about $2300 I believe.

4 - Mod order is basically Downpipe -> Tune. Ethanol blend if you want more power than 93. If you want even more power you'll have to upgrade the turbo. Intake gives much more turbo noises, exhaust is preference, neither gives meaningful power gains on the stock turbo. Not really a mod, but I would also recommend if you're capable of doing your own oil changes to change oil weight to something like 5w30, the 0w20 they use as standard with our cars sucks. There's many threads you can search on the forums for oil recommendations.

Not to be the old grumpy man yelling at the clouds; but if you’re 21 and this is your first car purchase, I wouldn’t even worry about increasing the power. It has more than enough for 99% of people.

Id do some sound mods (exhaust / intake) if you want a minimal increase in power but makes the drive more enjoyable. Besides that, just some aesthetic mods and be happy with it until you get bored.

Entire thread about this but tldr: downpipe + ecu unlock + MHD is more power than 99% of people need

Welcome to the Supra club. lol. I have a 2023 3.0 premium and added the JB4 tune (mostly run map 2 and sometimes map3) along with a AWE touring exhaust. Honestly I can’t imagine doing more for power and believe you would be very happy with the results. Other mods I’ve done have just been for cosmetics.

He didn't mention which state he lives in but here in CA, the highest octane is 91. I'm not sure if a JB4 or Dinan piggyback will be worth the cost.

The biggest difference on I have felt on both of my supras has been the xHP transmission tune. Kinda agree with the rest of the peoples here; stock power is more than most will be able to use, both on the street and the track. If you ever feel like your car does not have enough power, go into a very large and empty parking lot, turn off the nannies, and give it a go. Most people will then realize that 380 hp on a 3400 pound car is no joke.

Welcome to the forum, buddy.

A lot of what you asked has been posted numerous times before so luckily, there's a lot of discussions on those matters. The advice to search the forum is actually a decent response in this case.

As for more power, I'm in the camp of learn the car first. These cars are really fun when you learn to put the tires to work and can get out of a corner on the limit with all the systems wound back. That's what a lot of people mean when they say 400hp is enough.

Beyond that, you've got some solid answers whether they were what you were looking for or not.

He might have e85 stations around which would be huge.
