I'd like some input from some of the senior track guys...

So this year was my first time ever tracking a car seriously. Ive been on Pitt Race ~6 times and once on Nelson Ledges. Other than that I've done tons and tons of autoX days and a track sprint or 2. I've been collecting data, re-watching footage, and definitely want to make some changes to the car, namely going to coilovers (from my current HKS HAS kit) and some SPL arms.

The problem is, I'm really stuck on what set of coilovers to go with. Both from a cost perspective and in terms of how much benefit I would see as a relative newbie.

I've done a good bit of research on what the A90 community seems to like and I'm familiar with brand names and such from my past cars. Seems like the gold standard are MCS/Nitron/JRZ etc. I'd love to put in a set of JRZ pros but I don't think I can handle 5k+ on a set of coils ? and like I mentioned prior, I don't think I'd see the benefit of something so advanced.

So my question is, can anyone give me some insight in non 5k+ coilovers? I've read generally good things about FA 510s (and 520s) although I don't believe I've seen another A90 running them. I'm leaning towards ordering a custom set of 510s from Cygnus Performance or going with their X-1 motorsport set. Both are relatively similar in pricing at around the 3k mark.

(Also side note, I wonder if we could get the Mods to break out this whole thread into its own separate room? There's so much good info here that is dying to be stickied!!)

EDIT:
I should add, my car is 60/70% track with the rest being weekend warrior/cars and coffee sorta stuff if that helps

In all honesty, $5,000 is about the minimum you're probably going to pay for a really good set of coilovers. If Ohlins are less than $5,000, that's probably going to be your best bet.
Normally, I support Fortune Auto, completely. However, it doesn't seem that they're set for our cars is as good as their stuff for other platforms. Until I can find reliable information on them, I think I'd have to stay away.
Coilovers are the last place I would skip on money. They are the foundation for making a car faster. A junk set of coilovers full pretty much throw a wrench into any other plants you have for the car.

Ohlin user here. I can't say anything bad about them. Definitely a huge step up from lowering springs. Leave them on the soft setting and they ride nice. Put them on the track settings and they work. Are they mcs good? Probably not. But if you aren't chasing every fraction of a second per lap, they are a very good bang for the buck option.

I have Kw club sport v4. And Agee that taking this leap is around the 5k mark no Matter what you choose. I first used up the stock shocks. With camber plates and sport springs until I was really driving at the level that I was ready for these. Plus then I blew a stock strut instead of just replacing one took the next step….. Stock with camber plates , sport springs , and all adjustable bars, alignments and tires goes a long way. So some thing to consider. But coil overs are defiantly nice and give you a lot more adjustability.

Fully agree with Sean/Evo that the Ohlins are incredibly nice for the price. They really did their research for our car. A lot of race guys quickly asked me, knee jerk reaction - “Do they make Ohlins for your car?”

So yeah, my lap times came down, car feels great on road or track. I’m really happy with their recommended track settings and… have the ability to adjust if/when I get a pro behind the wheel of my car to dial her in even more.

I’m sure you already know with any coliovers you’ll have to get them rebuilt (~$500) every 2 years or so. Something to keep in mind. Also if you want to get hyper technical with your setup, Jackie PHD has more options than our Ohlins and can help if you’re competing with a race team.

I’ve used KW, Ohlins, Moton (when they were still in business), MCS, JRZ. I strictly use JRZ now.

Suspension is definitely something you don’t want to cheap out on if you’re looking to track your car. How far up the scale you want to go in terms of quality is dependent on how much you track the car and how much performance you want.

KW(non competition), Ohlins (non ttx) is a very mild damper, those I consider a street damper.

Now on your average track (2 minute lap) going from a street damper to a race damper, you’re gonna see at least a 2-3 second drop in lap times. That’s just a base, it’ll grow as you learn/dial-in and get more comfortable with the setup.

Getting it setup right is huge factor, I’ve done trackside setup in the past and just from tire pressure/damper adjustments… the driver was able to pick up 3 seconds by the end of the day.

The most obvious way to tell if your setup needs work is… excessive steering input needed, having to “fight the car” to keep it on the race line, tires get greasy quickly/low grip.

Great post!

I should spend some time looking into the JRZ offerings for our cars.

PHD racing seems to be their go to now. Another vote of confidence behind that brand.
